Ric Flair Busted Open Hardway, Evan Bourne’s Shooting Star Press
By Keelan Balderson | Mar 24, 2009 | Wrestling News | | Comments

- According to several reports Ric Flair was busted open “hardway” last night during his brawl with Chris Jericho, specifically from the camera shot Jericho gave him, which either made the original cut worse, or created an entirely new gash. He required multiple stitches. The initial blood spot itself was planned.

- You may remember that WWE banned the Shooting Star Press maneuver several years ago after Billy Kidman accidentally botched it on Chavo Guerrero. At the time the used it in a storyline, but when Kidman was released the move was banned.

Evan Bourne who does the move flawlessly recently told the WWE Magazine that “Honestly, when I signed my contract with WWE, there was no mention the move was banned. I did the maneuver all over Japan, so when I got to WWE, I wanted to use it. It’s my specialty. Once I showed them how I perform it, I was encouraged to use it.”

Paul London was supposedly pretty annoyed, because he also used the move a lot before his WWE run.

uh, no? Flair was busted open long before the camera shot. It happened in the ring while Jericho was punching him. He probably did an “eyebrow bust” where you use the knuckles on a sharp angle to draw blood (thanks for the information, Foley’s first novel!)

    • Keelan Balderson

As I said in the other posts, I haven’t watched Raw yet. My fault for taking other people’s word.

  • phil

no one busts the shooting star press like evan bourne. dudes a beast.

  • Jeff

I really felt bad for Flair during this extended beatdown that seemed to last forever.
It just showed how much Flair has lost in his craft.
Did anyone else notice when Flair told Jericho to run him into the ring apron?
It was clearly audible to anyone within earshot.
As for bleeding hardway…absolutely both times.
There was no blading involved here.
This was an effective segment that garnered a whole lot of heat for Jericho.
Word is now that Flair has 11 staples in his head to close the wound.

  • Keelan Balderson

Actually just watched it. You’re right that he took a planned fist to begin with, but after the camera shot he was gashed like a bitch.

Flair was busted open in the first 30 seconds of the thing with Jehrico on monday night ….good lord how can you post such obviously wrong info and call yourself some kind of reporter. a 6 year old that watched it on TV could have told you it wasnt the camera shot …dope .

    • Keelan Balderson

Yes my friend and a 6 year old can also read, unlike you. As I said, he either gigged or took and eyebrow punch right at the beginning, but after the camera shot he was either cut open worse, or busted elsewhere on his head; just look at the blood. The info was filtered right from the horses mouth. He had to have like 10 stitches. You don’t have a two inch gaping hole from a blade or knuckle nick to the eye. Either way the guy’s a genius cos that segment dew some serious heat!

  • Jeff

I don’t understand why Jericho would not put a finger in between the camera and Flair’s head to cushion the blow which is the norm during these camera shots.
It’s pretty risky business running at your opponent with a 30lb camera, making it appear to come in contact, and making it look real.
This is where the finger trick comes in according to a friend of mine that used to wrestle on the indy circuit
You have to make contact of some sort to make it look even remotely believable, but with an object (camera) packing that kind of weight, it’s very difficult to make it look legit without breaking or bruising the skin.
Maybe he did use the finger deal and still goofed it up due to the sheer bulkiness of the camera, but whatever the case the segment was very effective for what it was worth.
Kinda changes the course of things when you realize a person has been busted ope hardway doesn’t it?

    • Keelan Balderson

Flair loves blood, he probably told Jericho to do it.

  • Jjeff

    To Keelan:
Yep, Flair does seem to love the blood doesn’t he.
This guy during his career consistently bladed at house shows as well on television.
He and Dusty Rhodes had some real blood baths.
Flair was always a smart blader in that he would hardly never blade on the forehead area, but usually above the hairline so that he could hide any scarring unlike those morons like Dusty, Brother D-Von, Abdula the Butcher, New Jack and a host of others.
Flair played it smart so that in his older years he wouldn’t end up with a forehead that looks like it’s been attacked by a cheese grater and unable to hide.
I really don’t mean any disrespect to Dusty, D-von, or Abdula, (though my opinion of New Jack is that he is a piece of $hit)
but like Flair, they should have had their thinking caps on as my 6th grade teacher used to tell me so that they wouldn’t have to live out their days after wrestling with those embarrassing scars all over their foreheads.
What may have looked cool at the time and a sign of a warrior, looks pretty pathetic that a rational adult would cut themselves open on a regular basis.
Try explaining that to your grandkids. :)

    • Keelan Balderson

I just actually tried explaining it to my sister.
