Veteran WWE commentator Jerry Lawer suffered a real life heart attack during last night’s Raw broadcast and was rushed to a Montreal hospital, where he remains stable. The 62 year old had wrestled earlier in the night.
Reports from those in attendance reveal that during the Kane & Daniel Bryan vs. Titus O’Neil & Darren Young match, Lawler passed out at the announce table next to his colleague Michael Cole and rolled on to the floor. It was apparent that something might have gone wrong to those at home because “The King’s” usually over-the-top commentating had gone silent and there was visible concern from fans at ringside; some chanting for Lawler. When Cole resumed he was clearly distracted. However in the soap opera world of wrestling it’s not always clear what’s part of a storyline and what’s real.

Lawler wrestled earlier in the night; teaming with Randy Orton to take on CM Punk & Dolph Ziggler
What fans saw at home:
All was explained later in the broadcast when Michael Cole uttered the chilling words, “this is not part of the entertainment”, and that Lawler had been stretchered backstage for medical treatment, before being taken to hospital. Vince McMahon remained at his side through the whole ordeal.
Fan recorded footage shows some of what happened from a live audience perspective:
Luckily WWE have emergency staff immediately on hand to deal with in-ring injuries and Lawler received life saving treatment right away.
He has since undergone a CAT scan and is being closely monitored in a cardiac ICU unit. His girlfriend, Lauryn McBride noted on Facebook that “he is in stable condition and breathing on his own & heart is stable,” although at some point there was some concern about blood being cut off to Lawler’s brain and potential long-term damage this could cause.
Via their official website WWE stated: “We are hopeful Jerry makes a full recovery and returns to WWE in the near future.”
Our thoughts go out to Lawler and his family!
