Wrestlemania Diary: Hall of Fame Report; Lots of Off Air News, Moron Fans

Since Steve mainly focused on the show itself I’ll discuss some of the off air/backstage stuff that you probably wouldn’t have seen on TV whilst raiding the hotel mini bar. First off I’d like to say that I’ve never been to a Hall of Fame and was extremely excited. Although I enjoyed the event, it definitely wasn’t what I expected.

Firstly I’d like to rant on the fans. To all the morons that came dressed in t-shirts and shorts, or those that thought wearing a 1997 NWO shirt was appropriate, go to hell! Show some damn respect, this is the Hall of Fame and about the legends; it is not for the fans explicitly. I felt ashamed that they needed to put up signs telling fans to be respectful and not to cat call during the ceremony. It didn’t stop the little marks near me hooting and hollering!

On the flip side WWE themselves seemed to encourage this by selling boatloads of Austin merchandise. Seriously, this is not the night to be plugging this junk. We are here to listen and honor these legends as adults, not junk buying kids.

The setting itself was lovely and seeing all the wrestlers and their families come out, dressed like movie stars really drove home the importance of the ceremony.

Some interesting notes here; Cody Rhodes arrived with Beth Phoenix on his arm (let the speculation begin), Gail Kim arrived with her former Diva friends Molly Holly and Jackie Gayda, and DiBiase Sr probably got the pop of the arrivals! Cena and Edge both got big boos.

Hornswoggle who had been in character all weekend turned up in a suit. The only people not dressed smartly were JTG (in his gangsta crap), Jimmy hart who was in his cheesey music suit and Honky Tonk Man who was in his gimmick. I hope JTG gets punished, because Shad managed to be suited.

People of note in attendance included DDP (he’s friends with Austin), ROH star Bryan Danielson was with William Regal and Bobby Heenan! I did not see Kevin Nash or any TNA stars.

Everything else was said in the previous report. The stars were all timed with a big digital clock in plain view and poor Finkel sounded like he was rushing a class report.

As I say, you cant not enjoy such a unique event, but I expected far more respect from the fans and at least a long Austin speech.

Anyway, roll on Wrestlemania!

  1. Hey Mark,
I know what you mean by those moronic fans in attendance.
Perhaps WWE should designate the HOF in the future as a suit and tie event which may weed out some of these morons.
A friend of mine went to the event and called me several times during the event as well as sent me pics.
He was sitting pretty far back, and he said that because of these morons who have zero respect for these legends heckling so loud that he found it difficult to hear what was being said on stage.
Now get this…he calls me up and has to ask me what some of the guys were saying on stage because he could not understand or hear because of some of these fans! (I was watching the event live on http://www.justin.tv )
That’s pretty sad when the guy has to call me 1200 miles away from the event it’self to ask me what was being said.
He said that the layout, the atmosphere, and the number of fans in attendance was awesome, but a lot of the quotes by the inductees that should have recieved a major nostalgic pop did not.
He says that this was a perfect example of how the past is being forgotten by an evergrowing fanbase who could care less.

  2. jericho’s character speaks the truth about the wwe fans. many truly are parasites.

  3. People are idiots. And that’s the truth. I’ve worked in retail for 20 years and nothing compares to the morons I faced on a day to day basis.

When people start chanting crap at a HOF ceremony, it almost makes me cringe that I am a pro wrestling fan. They are rubes–and I don’t care where they come from. They are simple rubes (for lack of more un PC terms).

Like when John Cena was making introductions at one of the HOF (can’t remember if it was last year or the year before), they were chanting, “F-U Cena!” I am not a Cena fan but shit like that is uncalled for.

Maybe the WWE needs to police their crowds a little more. I was at a concert last year and some drunk idiot was screaming nasty stuff out to the performers and several people in my section complained. He was escorted out.

  4. I would like to start by saying before you guys go off calling people morons i think if the WWE wanted to make this a black tie affair that would be easy for them to do. So because its not stop calling people morons because the majority of wrestling fans are t-shirts and jeans people and those people are the people who pay these guys salaries. Not you clowns that go to one event a year. I myself was a little disappointed in stone cold coming out in a suit because we all no that is not his character and that is not the way he dresses on regular. So if you guys dont want to see different styles of people then dont go. Maybe you should go to the grammies or the oscars if you want to get all dressed up.
