TNA Turning Point Report
Thanks to Jon Jones:
- Consequences Creed vs. Sonjay Dutt vs. Petey Williams vs. Jimmy Rave vs. Volador vs. Eric Young vs. Doug Williams vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Homicide vs. Jay Lethal in an X Division rankings match opened the show.
After some good spots and exchanges, it came down to Lethal vs. Young for the top contender spot and Young picked up the pinfall win. Good opener, but not great as some were expecting. Young cut a promo afterwards designed to put over TNA’s young talents. It should have gone over huge but didn’t. That’s what happens when you don’t put your babyfaces over as you should do.
- Taylor Wilde and Roxxi beat Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed. Tons better than I thought it would be. I’d ever say this was Wilde’s best outing in a long time in TNA. She got the win with a German suplex and a bridge on Saeed.
- Backstage promo with JB and the Main Event Mafia. Jeff Jarrett interrupted and told them to stay professional tonight. Angle got pissed with him because Jarrett referred to him as one of his peers. Nash then said something along the lines of Jarrett should be looking after the kids, referring to the TNA Originals. Comments like this are exactly why this storyline will be a fail.
- Rhino beat X Division champion Sheik Abdul Bashir in a non-title grudge match. Man the crowd was hot for Rhino. But that heat soon went after the crowd started paying attention to SCOTT HALL and the ICP who made their way to sit at ringside. The way it was done was ok live but I’m guessing it sucked on TV as the crowd couldn’t have cared about the match. The ending was pretty poor. Bashir spat at the referee, turned around and ate a Rhino GORE.
- Mick Foley promo with the TNA Originals in the locker room. The Machine Guns had their backs to Foley and wouldn’t show him any respect. For some reason, they chose not to have Samoa Joe in the locker room with the fellow “kids” which again just makes this feud look so one-sided in favour of the MEM. Even things up!
- Beer Money Inc. beat The Motor City Machineguns to retain the TNA Tag Team titles. Good match – the best on the card up to this point. Roode pinned Sabin for the win after he and Storm hit their Diamond Cutter/Powerbomb type finisher.
- By this point, Scott Hall and ICP had left. People around me were speculating they’d return for the Kevin Nash-Samoa Joe match.
- Booker T beat Christian Cage to retain his Legends title. An OK match. Booker reversed a rollup and got a handful of tights for the win. Cage now joins the Main Event Mafia as a result. Booker cut a promo telling him they have an 8am meeting on Monday. He dropped the accent for this, which I wish he’d do for good.
- Kurt Angle beat Abyss in a Falls Count Anywhere match. This was awesome. Abyss’ best match this year I’d even say. They did some crazy stuff and as you may have expected, Angle got the win after Abyss took a crazy bump. Prior to that, Angle had hit an awesome somersault dive off the stage onto Abyss as well as spearing him through a false wall. It reminded me in places of the Angle vs. Shane McMahon match at the 2001 King of the Ring. I was a huge fan of that match as well.
The finish came when they both climbed some scaffold behind the Spanish announcers table. Angle nailed Abyss and he fell off the scaffold and through the table.
- Kevin Nash beat Samoa Joe. Despite the result, this was a real good match and they had a tough spot on the card as Angle-Abyss was that good. Nash sold like crazy for Joe and this was his best outing in a TNA ring by far. Actually you’d probably have to go back to the WCW days for his last match that was this good. No outside interference, but Nash got the win after a ref bump and a low blow. I guess Scott Hall was only here to sit ringside rather than for storyline purposes.
- Sting vs. AJ Styles was the main event. People near me expected a title switch since Nash, Angle and Booker T had all won. Those people were left disappointed as the story of the night was that the Main Event Mafia won all their matches. Sting retained to squash the life out of a really hot crowd after Booker and Angle interfered. Styles took them both out but Sting rolled him up for the pin.
Overall this was a really good show in terms of in-ring quality. This week’s TV tapings will be very interesting as right now the likes of Joe, Styles etc. look really inferior to the MEM. If this storyline is going to get over, they need to start booking the young guys strong and giving them wins.
A thumbs up PPV but as is usually the case with TNA, bad booking is spoiling things – the conclusion of the main event being a perfect example of that.
