Mid-Carders—-Lost in the Shuffle?

Many words are printed about the tremendous stars of the WWE. Any given day a fan can easily find pieces written about the exploits of Edge, Triple H, Batista, or Shawn Michaels. It seems nearly every move they make and match they have is newsworthy and garners the attention of the media.

It’s somewhat harder to find interviews or articles on those particular individuals this column is focused on: the mid-carders. They are hard working performers that for one reason or another do not shine as brightly as the top workers. Sometimes they are on their way up or down the ladder. Occasionally it is just where someone lands in the grand scheme of things. No matter what the case mid-carders should not be ignored or discounted. They have just as much if not more to offer than some of the current main event performers.

What the mid-carders have going for them is they are the workhorses. They are often out to gain fans and impress the crowd. Thus, they are very often the most fan accessible members of the roster. In some instances mid-carders can be more entertaining than the huge celebrity wrestlers. This is because they will always try just a little bit harder. These are the guys who will take the biggest risks, come up with the dazzling new holds, and work their given storyline for every ounce of entertainment it is worth.

Some of my favorite mid-card wrestlers are Jimmy Wang Yang, Shannon Moore, Santino Marella, and Jesse and Festus. They are all very talented and put on great matches on the weekly broadcasts. In my opinion they are all very marketable talents. Jimmy and Shannon and Jesse and Festus are great face tag teams and could perhaps breathe some new life into the tag team division. Santino is an excellent heel and simply awesome on the mic. He would make an excellent Intercontinental Champ as long as he had an equally strong face to oppose him.

Mid-carders are just as important to the roster as the major stars. There are only so many top spots; sadly not everyone can be a legend in the business. Next time a mid-card match comes on don’t leave and refresh a drink or grab a snack. Pay close attention and be pleasantly surprised by their arduous efforts and remarkable talent. The wrestlers occupying the middle of the card are in many ways the backbone of the behemoth that is the WWE.

Keelan’s Call:
I agree, you shouldn’t discount mid carders. Without a strong under card a wrestling promotion can’t succeed. These are the guys that warm up the crowd for the main event, have the ability to put other guys over and a lot of the time have the better “wrestling” matches themselves. Granted at times some stars are ready to move up to the next level and politics prevent it, but wrestling is a business and there are only so many top positions. Just because a wrestler isn’t on top doesn’t mean they aren’t very important to the show as a whole.
