The Real Deal
HHH—Truly King of Kings?
I get so awfully tired of hearing how Triple H’s success is due exclusively to his marriage to Stephanie McMahon. Some bitter and I presume jealous wrestlers, writers, and even fans are quick to claim his marriage is the only asset he possesses. Any and all derogatory remarks and comments are utter lunacy and smack of envy, resentment, and rancor.
Triple H has had two very devastating injuries and has battled back from them valiantly. He truly didn’t have to; he could have just called it quits. He could have just taken a job in a WWE office and collected the same if not more money than he ever made as a wrestler. Why go through all the risky surgery and painful rehab? He could have given it all up and lived happily on McMahon money for the rest of his life.
Here’s why he did what he did: Above and beyond all else Triple H is a wrestler. He needs to be in that ring doing what he does just as surely as he needs to breathe. When he was bitten by the wrestling bug it dug in deep. It burrowed not only into his heart and soul, but his very essence. From that moment on nothing was right in the world unless Triple H was working as a pro wrestler. Unlike so many of his critics he had the guts to follow his dream and succeed on a level only a gifted few will ever attain.
I truly believe if Triple H were still single or married to anyone else he would be in the same position he is today. I have been told when he was younger he was the hardest working and hungriest wrestler the outfit had ever seen. He did what he had to do and paid his dues like everyone else. Anyone who says he has skated by on his wife’s coattails is ignorant and misinformed.
Love him or hate him, it is always pure magic when Triple H steps into the ring. I adore him on the mic, especially when he was in the reunited DX. Triple H is a born performer and will always be one of the best to have ever stepped between the ropes. Each and every time he enters a ring he gives it his all. He is an excellent role model for up and coming wrestlers; to capture his determination and drive would serve them well.
Keelan’s Call:
This is an interesting subject, one that seems to get rehashed each time Triple H makes another comeback after time out, as people begin to get sick of him as champion. There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that Triple H would still be a main event star if he wasn’t married to Stephanie McMahon. He was pretty much in that slot before they got married and once you hit the main event in WWE there’s no going back unless you’re just a transitional champion.
With a body like Triple H’s, the technically sound in ring skills of the game and the ability to speak like hunter does, makes him a top guy in WWE by default.
…However I am also a firm believer that his marriage to the boss’s daughter has a huge influence on his position. He gets to be part of creative meetings, and therefore has control over his character and others – that’s a fact. Whether he uses that in a negative way is debatable and where the problem lies.
It’s not a question of would he, or would he not be on top. It’s a question of does he use his power in the right way, which is best for everyone and the wrestling business as a whole.
CM Punk is champion, but not on Triple H’s brand???
