The Heel Report – Week 6

As a fan I have always been naturally drawn to cheering for heels and booing faces, now maybe I have the WWE backwards but it just seems to me that heels are far more entertaining to watch, so I have decided to showcase the heels of the WWE in all their cheating and underhanded glory with this weekly heel report.

This week’s top ten:

1st Place: Chris Jericho

True to his word; Jericho managed to unmask Rey and take his title and whilst he might not have been able to overcome the ‘tweaner’ champion, it certainly didn’t stop him from racking up enough heel points to keep him far above his competitors and remain in pole position. (10/10 points)

2nd Place: Edge

A quick divorce and a few self-righteous pleas bring Edge back up the chart this week. While Extreme Rules could have gone better for the Rated-R superstar, he kept his head above water and managed to steal some of Punk’s possible heel spotlight on Smackdown. (9/10 points)

3rd Place: Jack Swagger

After a slightly weak start at Extreme Rules, Swagger managed to come back on ECW. Mic time equals heel points when it comes to the 21st century superstar as more airtime this week and an antagonistic tag match brings Swagger back to a comfortable third place. (8/10 points)

4th Place: The Miz

Stepping up once again on Raw, The Miz managed to take seven points on the heel chart and showed that he is more than just a Cena-dissing wannabe. Striking the Big Show with a steel chair until he could take out Cena showed to everyone just how awesome the Miz really is. (7/10 points)

5th Place: Dolph Ziggler

A win against Khali by count-out and an interesting new direction for his character means that Ziggler only slipped one place this week and manages to keep his average up on the chart. Can the platinum ex-cheerleader keep this momentum up? We’ll just have to wait and see. (6/10 points)

6th Place: Zack Ryder

Keeping up a heel mentality throughout his contest with Evan Bourne shows a bright future for the ECW newcomer, securing a nice five points for the atrociously dressed, former tag team champion. (5/10 points)

7th Place: Randy Orton

A strong start but weak finish on Raw, as well as a poor showing in his steel cage match at Extreme Rules means the Legend Killer is only able to muster up four points in the chart. Perhaps with the title seemingly vacated Orton may be able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. (4/10 points)

8th Place: C.M. Punk

Seeming undecided, the fans boo Punk enough after his title win to justify calling some of his actions heel-like and therefore he managed to find himself in eighth place on the chart. The question now is will this be a one-time appearance for the straight-edge superstar. (3/10 points)

9th Place: Ted DiBiase

Assisting Randy Orton and some solid heel tag work gives the son of the Million Dollar man two points and puts him in line for a possible tag title run in the near future. (2/10 points)

10th Place: Maryse

Working the heel angle once again, the French diva made her way back to the chart with a solid title defence and whilst she may be ‘dodging’ Mickey, she is holding her own in the competition to be top female heel. (1/10 points)

Overall top ten:

* 1st Place – Chris Jericho: 56/50

*2nd Place – Edge: 43/50

*3rd Place – Randy Orton: 42/50

*4th Place – The Miz: 39/50

*5th Place – Jack Swagger: 33/50

*6th Place – Dolph Ziggler: 20/50

*7th Place – The Big Show: 17/50

*8th Place – Matt Hardy: 16/50

*9th Place – Maryse: 12/50

*10th Place – Ted DiBiase: 11/50

Weekly Filler:

The Face-Off: The Raw Announce Team

There has been a lot of talk about how bad the Raw announce team is but recently it has gotten worse. Flat commentary and blatantly fake excitement with lines like; “It was an awesome…um, inspiring victory for John Cena last night” tell the viewers that these announcers just don’t care, so why should we? The only thing the pair do seem to care about is the more regal of the two’s obsession with younger women. I find this type of talk strange when the WWE are now marketing their product to children. If you were a parent would you let your child watch a program where they had to listen to two men ogle young women? Hopefully the answer is no.

I started off watching wrestling with the same team and I remember really enjoying their work together so assume on bias against the duo, but even I have to admit that maybe it is time the two considered another direction. Perhaps PG is not the rating for them.

worse. Flat commentary, blatantly fake excitement with l and far too much emphasis on the King’s obsession with younger women makes this commentary team worthy of contempt this week. I started off watching wrestling with the same team and I remember really enjoying their work together so assume on bias against the duo, but even I have to admit that maybe it is time the two considered another direction. Perhaps PG is not the rating for them.

Face the Facts: The ECW Announce Team

In comparison the fresh-faced duo in the land of extreme bring a smile to my face by giving great play-by-play, along with some humorous banter. Exchanges such as; “You know how I feel.”…“With your hands.” and “With action like this there’s no need to talk.” *silence* “That doesn’t mean we should stop.” Most fans appreciate this humour and those who don’t are not let down as there is enough story and in-ring coverage to balance out any risky banter that might be passed around.

For certain you can say that with the ECW team you get a sense of enthusiasm and real interest in the sport, without the presence of constant regurgitated advertising and story set up. The team allow the viewers to think for themselves and I can only thank them for that.

*Special Mention: the match on Superstars between Evan Bourne and Zack Ryder was brilliant in wrestling, character working and commentary.

On the Rise: Christian

A ‘tweaner’ this week, along with C.M. Punk, the WWE seem to be testing the water for Christian to have a heel run against Dreamer. Personally I would welcome the change since Christian has a good look for a heel and the ‘Peeps’ gimmick, along with the Peep Show, works better as a joke. Could a heel Christian give his brother and Y2J a run for their money on the chart? I for one think so.

Flat-Footed: Jamie Noble, Brian Kendrick & Chavo Guererro

Perhaps for the most part this is down to WWE creative but it can’t be ignored this week that the heel members of Raw’s six-man tag match defined the term ‘jobber’. It is a shame because all are good wrestlers, but while Raw is being steered towards a variety show for children, these guys will always come up on the short end. Why not have a cruiserweight division on Raw, give these guys something to work with. Have Primo and Carlito drop their titles and let them, The Miz, Kofi, Matt, Cody & DiBiase join in to make a massively entertaining match type akin to TNA’s X Division.

This week made me believe that a serious shake up is needed in the WWE, especially on Raw, and hopefully that has happened now. Sorry for the delay of the report this week but 13 hour days of filming leave little time to watch WWE and write on each show. For those keeping score the report covers Extreme Rules to last week’s Smackdown. Hopefully service will resume as normal next week.

This is James Wright signing off.
