The Heel Report – Week 18

As a fan I have always been naturally drawn to cheering for heels and booing faces, now maybe I have the WWE backwards but it just seems to me that heels are far more entertaining to watch, so I have decided to showcase the heels of the WWE in all their cheating and underhanded glory with this weekly heel report.

This week’s top ten:

1st Place: C.M. Punk

Another great week for the Straight-Edge champion, I find it mind boggling that he stayed face for so long when he is clearly an amazing heel worker. This week’s little touches that made his performance brilliant were; clapping himself when pretending to be Hardy, this guy clearly watches tapes and slipping in the line ‘non-title right?’ showing that this is all he cares about. (10/10 points)

2nd Place: Randy Orton

Lots of airtime and a somewhat pointless plan lands the Legend Killer in the number two spot. I’m really starting to think Orton is being booked badly since I used to be a massive Orton fan, but now I don’t really care if he loses, wins or even appears. Somehow he’s just not the same impressive athlete and cocky young upstart that I remember. (9/10 point)

3rd Place: Cody Rhodes

A nice push for Cody this week and a surprising crowd reaction at the end of Raw shows that the son of the American Dream isn’t actually being all that held back by being in Orton’s shadow. Perhaps the WWE are hinting at Legacy turns too soon however, maybe it’s because their merchandise doesn’t look too good, who wants an ‘L’ surrounded by flames anyway? (8/10 points)

4th Place: William Regal

A decent push for Regal seems to guarantee him a place in the chart for a long while. This week he both took out Jobber Rex and accompanied his behemoth backup to the ring in a tag match. I’m happy to see Regal being shown as a serious contender for the ECW title, which he is. (7/10 points)

5th Place: Shamus

His first main event match grants a mid-level place in the chart for the Celtic Warrior. Hopefully, while useful for progressing his career, this Goldust saga is now over and Shamus can move on to bigger and better competition. Might I suggest the face-turned Shelton Benjamin. (6/10 points)

6th Place: Dusty Rhodes

A nice heel turn after almost a whole show of being a face. While I still feel like the set up was a little pointless in execution the concept behind it was sound. I’m glad the WWE are varying the face-heel alignment of their guest hosts, it would be terrible if they were all just solidly face. (5/10 points)

7th Place: Natalya

Pulling double duty and coming out on top with a pinfall gets the Hart Dynasty’s Natalya into the chart this week. It’s a shame the Woman’s champion is a heel because she definitely deserves a shot in the near future. Going off topic a bit I think WWE should get rid of most of its diva waste, keep the good wrestlers, move them all to ECW and have a brilliant Women’s division there. (4/10 points)

8th Place: Beth Phoenix

The second diva to appear on the chart this week and again it is for being dominant in the ring. Two matches on Raw and a near title win shows that the WWE does have some decent divas. Now if only they could be seen through the pointless eye candy that all try but will never even approach the Stratus status of going from T&A to multiple time Women’s champion. (3/10 points)

9th Place: Ted DiBiase

Again more getting points out of tagging along with Orton than doing any work himself. It seems to flip between Orton holding these 2nd generation superstars back and keeping them afloat. Truth is I don’t think WWE creative actually know what to do with the pair, despite being certain that they are “the future of the business”. Write some decent storylines to get them over then! (2/10 points)

10th Place: The Miz

A strong presence in the Fatal-4-Way on Raw manages to get Miz into the chart but only at last place. Looks like it will take a little longer for him to achieve his quest for the greatest comeback in Raw’s history. (1/10 points)

Overall top ten:

* 1st Place – Chris Jericho: 149/180

*2nd Place – Randy Orton: 118/180

*3rd Place – C.M. Punk: 91/180

*4th Place – Dolph Ziggler: 85/180

*5th Place – The Miz: 79/180

*6th Place – Edge: 69/180

*7th Place – Jack Swagger: 64/180

*8th Place – The Big Show: 38/180

*9th Place – William Regal: 29/180

*10th Place – Cody Rhodes: 26/180

Weekly Filler:

The Face-Off: Undertaker’s Cowardly Attacks

Okay so someone explain to me how being a face involves turning down DIRECT challenges but then coming out after an opponent’s match and surprising him in the dark. That’s twice now that the Undertaker has done this. Sure it builds up anticipation for their match at Breaking Point but I’m going to be sorely disappointed if Punk does indeed lose the title to the Phenom.

Face the Facts: Morrison vs. Mysterio

Talk about making the best out of a bad situation. Not only did the two put on a great match but the crowd reception was incredible, especially for Morrison, which I was somewhat surprised by. This just goes to show that storyline and Main Event names are secondary to actual in-ring ability since nothing the WWE has done for a damn long time has provoked a chant of “This is Awesome!” and yet TNA get it whenever they have a big X Division match.

Not only that but now Morrison is the champ and thereby he gets more over and now we have Morrison vs. Ziggler to look forward too, arguably the two fastest rising stars on Smackdown. We can only thank Mysterio for being busted and suspended. Mysterio’s gone, Hardy’s gone, now if only John Cena would come down with a severe case of Swine Flu the WWE could break away from the PG era altogether.

On the Rise: C.M. Punk

I know I’ve already talked about him on the top of the chart this week but I’m going to heap even more praise on the Drug-Free sensation that is C.M. Punk. Hiding behind a mask of moral superiority while being a supremely flawed individual himself is a gimmick that he could draw on for the rest of his career and for most Superstars it would get them a secure place in the Mid-card.

But C.M. Punk is different, as I have said before it is the little touches that he adds to matches and to promos that make him really stand out as a top class heel. I find myself actually anticipating a main event match at a PPV for the first time in months and I’m especially looking forward to the return of the Anaconda Vice, a finisher that impressed me from the first time I witnessed it employed by Punk on ECW. Why he and the WWE decided to replace it with the GTS I will never know.

Flat-Footed: Chris Jericho

From one top heel to another; Chris Jericho is here simply because of who he is, Chris Jericho. Just think about that, Chris Jericho didn’t make it onto the chart this week, has the world gone mad! Or is it that he is being weighted down by 440 pounds of dead weight? No mic time and only one match this week meant that Jericho didn’t even get a look in on the chart. This is just shameful and I can only hope that it is an anomaly and that things will return back to normal soon.

Crossing the Line: Chris Sabin vs. AJ Styles

Matches like this are what makes TNA worth watching. Forget the MEM stuff, forget all the back-biting and politics; decent, solid, fast-paced wrestling is what makes the show great. Plus whenever the Motor City Machine Guns appear you know there is money to be made.

I have to say sorry for just how late this week’s report is. Fact is I have had no way to watch the shows until midway through the week and it was my birthday on Thursday so I have found absolutely no time to write what I know must be the highlight of your week. Please trust that the next report will appear shortly after this one as I now have a fully functioning connection and all the shows ready and waiting to be watched. This is James Wright signing off.

  1. Very nice work and happy birthday dude

  2. Actually, I was thinking that way about ECW becoming a total divas division, too. But then again – from the Land of Extreme to the Land of Divas… Well, since I’m a diva fan myself, I would STILL look forward to it. :)

    Ohh and, happy birthday, man.
