The Heel Report – Week 17
As a fan I have always been naturally drawn to cheering for heels and booing faces, now maybe I have the WWE backwards but it just seems to me that heels are far more entertaining to watch, so I have decided to showcase the heels of the WWE in all their cheating and underhanded glory with this weekly heel report.
This week’s top ten:
1st Place: C.M. Punk
An amazing title win followed by a brilliant defense sends Punk easily into the top spot on the chart. Punk has become the top heel in the company in an incredibly short time and it’s clear to see why. This is not only are his in-ring and mic skills being up to scratch, but also due to his innovation when it comes to his performances, like shouting ‘I’m out’ in the cage match when he actually wasn’t. Little touches bring life to his character and set him apart from the rest. (10/10 points)
2nd Place: Randy Orton
Heel tactics galore filled Orton’s title defence at Summerslam and it gets him nine points in the chart this week. Unfortunately for the Legend Killer he couldn’t out-shine the Straight-Edge champion but he certainly deserves to be this high up on the chart, despite taking some punishment on Monday Night Raw. (9/10 point)
3rd Place: Chris Jericho
Ever since teaming up with the Big Show, Jericho just can’t seem to make it back to that top spot that he used to frequent regularly. Still I can’t help but feel that Jericho’s place at the moment is a good one as it adds a much needed heel presence to Raw and it is helping the tag team division actually stay interesting due to the challenge the unified champions represent. (8/10 points)
4th Place: Dolph Ziggler
Ziggler said it himself this week; he deserves to be champion and we all know it, and hopefully after Smackdown this week he will be. It’s a shame he doesn’t get the opportunity to make Mysterio submit at Breaking Point but maybe they will hand him the Big Red Jobber instead. (7/10 points)
5th Place: Big Show
It’s clear in heel terms who is benefiting the most out of Jericho and Show’s alliance. Big Show has had decent standing on the chart since first teaming with Jericho and doesn’t look to be going away any time soon. I do have to admit though that as the weeks go by the team seem to be actually developing a nice chemistry that comes across in the ring and in their promos. (6/10 points)
6th Place: William Regal
Three times in a row the distinguished English gent has come out standing triumphant over the ECW champion, although the length of their Summerslam match was a little bit of a slap in the face for this ring general. Still his new faction seems to be getting a decent push, we’ll just have to wait and see if it actually leads to an ECW title reign. (5/10 points)
7th Place: Ted DiBiase
Two good showings against DX gets DiBiase Jr. on the chart, he probably would have been a bit higher if the WWE would actually let their young stars get over. As it is a loss both times keeps the son of the Million Dollar man down in seventh place for the week. (4/10 points)
8th Place: Jack Swagger
One big mouthed announcement gets Swagger quickly out of his losing rivalry with MVP and into a possible US title reign in the near future. I personally think that Swagger would be great as US champion and hopefully he could work it into his gimmick and make it his own. (3/10 points)
9th Place: Cody Rhodes
Taking the brunt of the punishment in the DX feud, young mister Rhodes ends up two places behind his Priceless partner. It seems like the second generation superstar will be taking a backseat more and more to Ted as the WWE seem to get set for his face turn later on this year. (2/10 points)
10th Place: Ezekiel Jackson
Not getting slapped by Christian separates the silent duo and puts Jackson above Koslov and gets him the final place on the chart. This new stable seems like a good move for both Jackson and Koslov, who don’t seem to be too strong on the mic by themselves. Perhaps this way he will get a decent push and the WWE creatives will actually find a good way to utilise this mountain of a man. (1/10 points)
Overall top ten:
* 1st Place – Chris Jericho: 149/170
*2nd Place – Randy Orton: 108/170
*3rd Place – Dolph Ziggler: 85/170
*4th Place – C.M. Punk: 81/170
*5th Place – The Miz: 78/170
*6th Place – Edge: 69/170
*7th Place – Jack Swagger: 64/170
*8th Place – The Big Show: 38/170
*9th Place – Zack Ryder: 23/170
*10th Place – Ted DiBiase: 23/170
Weekly Filler:
The Face-Off: The DX Summerslam start & Vince McMahon’s birthday celebrations
First off, I usually like the DX promos, they are pointless but with the absence of comedy in the WWE recently it’s any port in a storm you know. But the beginning of Summerslam was painful, not least because most of the skit was stolen from Gremlins 2! How cheap is that?! From Abe Lincoln to the film breaking, simply a shocking rip off showing the writers lack of creativity and originality.
Then there is Vince’s birthday celebration on Raw. Now I know It’s thanks to him that we are watching blah blah blah, but why can’t they keep all that rubbish off air. It really wasn’t entertaining and at the end of the day EVERYTHING that happens in the WWE should aim to be entertaining. That’s why cheap pops and ego indulgence, which is a McMahon staple, is really bad for business.
Face the Facts: Undertakers appearance at Summerslam
I’m not really that big a fan of the Undertaker, but I was impressed with his return as it was unexpected and staged really well. Some have complained that there is no real reason why the Deadman would go after Punk but I actually don’t care this time since the idea of Punk vs. Taker in a submission match actually interests me as a potential match of the year. Both are well versed in striking and submissions so I think if done right the pair could put on a clinic and a win over the Undertaker would solidify Punk as a worthy champion rather than being transitional yet again.
On the Rise: The US and IC title scenes
A few months ago these two titles seemingly meant nothing. They were being held into stagnation or passed around like trinkets. Matches and rivalries concerning them were few and far between and good matches and rivalries were non-existent. But recently that has changed, Kingston and Mysterio, along with their challengers, have put on great shows and even more recently the set up of having multiple challengers gunning for both titles is a great way to show that the titles actually do mean something. This new bumper crop of talent that are competing to take the next step is enough to justify this sudden rush in interest in the mid-card titles and I’m glad the WWE have seen that you don’t need a complex, soap-opera storyline when it comes to these titles. Winning and owning the title in itself should be enough of a reason for feuds to start up.
Flat-Footed: The Chavo vs. Hornswaggle feud
For Christ’s sake! Who finds this stuff entertaining or funny? It’s been going on for weeks and the first time was rubbish. Please someone put Chavo out of his misery and send him off to TNA. Him and Rey could debut as a tag team and make a massive splash. Please no one make jokes about Chavo not being prepared to do ‘small time’ work.
A good week in general for the heels of the WWE, apart from Orton, who took a bit of a beating against the massive advertising force that is DX and John Cena. Still a lot of new rivalries developing and characters coming through that seem more compelling and long lasting than some of the last few years. In my opinion Summerslam was a good show, the Undertaker is back and Jeff Hardy is gone, all is right with the world.
Oh one last point, I was blown away by Ask the Divas this week. It was entertaining, humorous, informative and well worth the air time it got. False, it was a pointless and rubbish waste of time…Again. This is James Wright signing off.

chavo must of pissed someone off. i kind fill sorry for him, just a teeny tiny bit.
