The Heel Report – Week 11

As a fan I have always been naturally drawn to cheering for heels and booing faces, now maybe I have the WWE backwards but it just seems to me that heels are far more entertaining to watch, so I have decided to showcase the heels of the WWE in all their cheating and underhanded glory with this weekly heel report.

This week’s top ten:

1st Place: Chris Jericho

Taking care of business and working over time, Y2J bursts back into first place on the heel chart with an amazing array of promos and ring savvy. This man makes anyone he works with look good and is completely deserving of the Superstar of the year award. (10/10 points)

2nd Place: C.M. Punk

Showing more depth every week is the straight-edged champion. Calling Hardy a joke and using Jericho as a missile helps Punk go over with the fans as a true-blue heel. Not shaking Morrison’s hand at the end of their match was an especially nice touch. (9/10 points)

3rd Place: Dolph Ziggler

A slip down from first place sees Ziggler only claiming eight points in this week despite a nasty shot to Mysterio on the floor in their Smackdown tag team main event. With all his momentum in recent weeks Dolph is becoming the WWE’s fastest rising heel in recent memory. (8/10 points)

4th Place: Jack Swagger

A true test against the straight up Ballin’ superstar on Raw raises Swagger’s game and gets him seven points on the chart. In his first proper match on Monday night the All-American Amercian gave a good showing and is starting to show why he should soon have a main event spot on the WWE’s flagship program. (7/10 points)

5th Place: Randy Orton

Another guest host brings out Orton’s venom and with what seemed to be a stalemate being reached the Legend Killer finds himself in mid-place in the chart. Will Orton find the same conflict with next week’s guest hosts or will we finally have a heel host for Raw in this PG era. (6/10 points)

6th Place: Zack Ryder

The man who made Superstars his home finally got his chance to shine on ECW, and against the Golden one himself. There is just something about this former tag team champion that gets the crowd all riled up and it lands him at a solid sixth in the chart. (5/10 points)

7th Place: Carlito

Reverting to his old apple-spitting ways is the Caribbean high-flyer this week, earning him his first appearance in the heel chart. Will this new brother vs. brother feud go anywhere? Will Carlito’s in-ring style reflect his turn enough to afford him another place in the chart? Will he ever get a haircut? Only time will tell. (4/10 points)

8th Place: Paul Burchill

An aggressive match on ECW sees the brother Burchill in eighth place. The good thing about a face like Yoshi is that a lack of dynamic charisma allows less charismatic heels to shine in their matches. Hence Burchill is granted an appearance on the chart this week. (3/10 points)

9th Place: Natalya

Some great cheerleading and a little in-ring action herself sees Natalya also have a debut on the chart. Perhaps Edge’s absence has created a heel vacuum that is allowing all these new faces to appear, or maybe rumours of the WWE turning non-PG are true and heels are getting more opportunity to be vicious and cruel, either way the Hart Dynasty seem to be benefitting. (2/10 points)

10th Place: David Hart Smith

The second member of the Hart Dynasty to appear in the chart this week. A nice exploitation of an ankle injury helped the powerhouse of the pink-wearing faction gain a leg up on the competition despite an eventual loss and he departs this week with a single point to his name. (1/10 points)

Overall top ten:

* 1st Place – Chris Jericho: 101/110

*2nd Place – Edge: 69/110

*3rd Place –Dolph Ziggler: 64/110

*4th Place – The Miz: 64/110

*5th Place – Randy Orton: 61/110

*6th Place – Jack Swagger: 57/110

*7th Place – C.M. Punk: 27/110

*8th Place – Zach Ryder: 17/110

*9th Place – The Big Show: 17/110

*10th Place – Matt Hardy: 17/110

Weekly Filler:

The Face-Off: Brie & Nikki Bella:

Technically I could stretch this out over two weeks but as these two seem to be paired together everywhere else I might as well do the same. I really can’t see what their appeal is apart from the fact that they are twins. This just seems incredibly gimmicky to me and the win on ECW highlighted this pointlessness as there was clearly no reason why a fresh person needs to come into the match to perform a school boy roll up. Any other match the person on the outside would have just distracted the opponent and then they would have been rolled up by the wrestler in the ring. It’s cheap and vacant stuff like this that the WWE needs to stay away from as it detracts from what the company is really about, which is quality entertainment.

Face the Facts: Mary Henry

Purely because of his work with Jericho this week the “World’s Strongest Man” gets some praise as I felt the segment between the two on Raw channelled some of the WWE’s former comic genius that it has been lacking for so long. The look on both Henry’s and Jericho’s faces were priceless throughout the exchange and the idea of heels walking out on matches with Henry makes people look good all round. Adding heat for the heels and solidifying Henry as an actual threat rather than a sweaty joke, which he has been portrayed as on several occasions. I do have to wonder how long the gimmick of teasing heels with phony alliances will last however as it has now been used on both Jericho and Orton. Does Henry have any more tricks up his proverbial sleeve to keep his face profile on Raw?

On the Rise: Shelton Benjamin

A win over the number one contender propels the Gold Standard into the ECW limelight and after a shaky start in his second debut on Tuesday nights it seems like Benjamin might actually get somewhere in the Land of Extreme this time. I think Shelton would make a fine ECW champion and it is well deserved so here’s hoping he gets his chance sometime in the near future.

Flat-Footed: Kane

This has got to be the worst usage of Kane that the WWE could have thought of for his return. Being Ziggler’s enforcer would have been a better move, or just straight up destroying Khali since he is only dead weight anyway. Having Kane run from Khali just confirms what we all know already; that Kane is not the monster we all grew to know and love. He is a shell of his former self and quite frankly without some quick thinking by the WWE creative *cough* I don’t see his return lasting much more than a few weeks before he disappears from our screens again.

All in all a good week for the heels of the WWE. I have to try not to get my hopes up that this PG era might be coming to an impromptu end but there does seem to be hope in sight. The Smackdown heel scene is firing on all cylinders despite the loss of the rated-R superstar, who I’m sure we all wish a speedy recovery, even though it seems evident from the segment on Smackdown that Edge will be coming back as a face the next time we see him. All that’s left to see is what Night of Champions yielded and exactly who Chris Jericho’s partner turned out to be.

  1. I would have placed Punk first.. and Jericho 2nd for this week. The ammount of heat Punk got was amazing and I was real impressed. Yes Jericho gets it to.. But Punk is turning into the ultimate heel.. and I think he deserves the top spot

  2. Punk did well this week but in terms of points adding up Jericho racks up so many in his promos that he had twice the number of points by the end of the week than Punk. Which makes sense since he was on two shows. So they probably would have been more even if they had both just been on Smackdown. Also walking away from a match is one of the biggest point earners and Jericho did that on Raw against Henry. That’s how Cody Rhodes managed to get as high as he did last week.

Punk is definitely coming on leaps and bounds though and may very well appear at the top of the chart next week.
