Late ECW Thoughts: That Show Was Damn Entertaining

For those that record ECW every week and never get round to watching it, or for those that just don’t tune in at all, I strongly advise you to watch Tuesday’s episode of ECW on Sc-Fi because I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Now it may just be a flash in the pan, but it felt fresh and had the same atmosphere Raw had a few weeks back. So if you aren’t a fan, give it another go.

The temporary and possibly permanent (if Mick Foley really does decided to quit), addition of Matt Striker to the announce booth was enlightening. I knew this guy could talk well, but damn if he was put in Mike Adamle’s spot saving that $300,000 contract (which the investors weren’t happy about) to begin with we’d have been enjoying ECW a long time ago. He can call moves well since he is obviously a wrestler, he has character and confidence when he speaks and as he stated on the broadcast, he is a wrestling nerd meaning he can throw in comments from yesteryear that us long time fans can enjoy. On top of that he sold what needed selling, wasn’t over the top at screaming and gave some context as to why moves were being done. I’m all for him being here for the long haul. I’d go as far as to say he’s better than Tazz, but that’s jumping the gun since his work was obviously pulled diwn by Adamle’s.

Announcing obviously doesn’t make a show, but the rest of the elements were there. We got solid in ring action (what can you expect with one hour?), some flawless mic time between Mike Knox and Finlay which drew great heat and the final segment with the well promoted Dirt Sheet was absolutely hilarious. If WWE are going PG then this type of comedy can fill the void. A few more of these and you have yourself a face tag team in Miz and Morrison.

There were the odd bad parts, aka Braden “I put on weight and forgot how to wrestle” Walker and the ever pathetic old yeller Tommy Dreamer, but for ECW this was a strong show and if you go in acknowledging that the original product is dead and the new one is where new stars are being groomed then you’ll enjoy it.

That’s it for blog thoughts, but don’t forget to discuss this and other topics in our official forums! Over and out…
