Jeff Injured, Jenna Morasca News, Impact and Superstars Ratings

- Thanks to reader Brittany Pickle:

“I know you’ve probably gotten this a thousand times but I just thought I’d pass on that Jeff Hardy broke his finger and banged his shoulder up last night during the ladder match. At least that’s what his girlfriend posted on her Twitter account.”

This is indeed correct. Jeff is not expected to take any time off.

- It seems Jenna Morasca might not just be a C-lister that takes up wrestling TV time. She was recently accepted to Columbia for a masters degree in Psychology.

- This past Thursday’s episode of TNA Impact on Spike TV drew a 1.1 cable rating. It seems to be down from its recent role of 1.3’s and 1.2s.

- Also this past Thursday’s WWE Superstars rating is in, scoring a 1.0 cable rating on WGN America.

  1. superstars is going to beat tna is upcomming weeks

  2. WOW he broke his finger he won’t be out that long

  3. if Superstars does beat TNA…who cares. Old ECW had much fewer views than TNA and old ECW was MUCH better than anything TNA or WWE could ever hope for.
it’s not all about ratings wwe fan. If life was about that; “Bev. Hills Chihuahua” and “High School Musical” would receive Oscars.
if WWE owned the TNA brand. Impact would beat Raw. A lot of “passive” wrestling viewers doesn’t know TNA exists. It’s about 30 or so years younger (more then that, but since Vince).
dispite it’s flaws (and there’s a lot) TNA is a good product. Also when a star gets fired, he can still work AND be on TV.
Sure they’re giving part time work. My god! It’s tough wrestling three times a week. Angle and Sting can have a family AND be on TV. Not die in a hotel room like Brian Pillman.

  4. Dorkstar, I hear what you’re saying but the cold reality is that the survival of an entertainment company depends entirely on ratings. TNA may be a more exciting product, but WWE is already so well-established & has the money and influence to draw more viewers.

Just as with the movies you mentioned; I agree with you that they’re awful as far as movies are concerned, but the studios know that pandering to as wide an audience as possible results in the most sales.

I think the saddest outcome of both examples is that companies/studios see this as “what the people want”. Hence we get more crappy PG-rated stuff on WWE, and more crappy mainstream movies.

How I imagine your stereotypical studio exec reacts to awful movie pitches: “A talking Chihuahua from Beverly Hills? FUCK YES. People will eat this shit right up.”

  5. I understand that this buisness is based on ratings. I live in the U.S. You hit the nail on the head. WWE gets better raitings because it’s better funded, NOT because it’s a better product.
I’m just tired of hearing anti-TNA comments based on ratings. I love TNA, but it has flaws. You can come up with something than “how come it only gets a 1.2″ Those are fucking numbers! Unless you sell adds, that shouldn’t have an impact on how much you enjoyed the show. Unless you can only enjoy stuff everyone likes… Like sheep!
Shit! Let’s all ditch wrestling and just watch “Greys Anatomy” and “American Idol”. Everyone likes it, it must be good. Right wwe fan.

  6. Yeah, it’s tiring, but it applies to all entertainment. That some people equate high ratings/sales with something being “good” is just.. sad. Unfortunately that’s how businesses assess their success, which results in blander products. They figure if people like eating shit, then obviously they must want more shit.

As someone who’s been away from wrestling for a long time and only started following it again a few months ago, I first went to where I left off, namely the WWE. I caught up on what I’ve been missing (pretty much everything since 1994 or so), and discovered this competitive little company called TNA. Watched some of their shows and dismissed them as low quality. Kept watching WWE and started getting tired of HHH winning, Cena’s boring routine, Jeff Hardy’s crappy promos, and wondered why they went PG.

Gave TNA another shot and holy HELL does WWE have a lot to learn from TNA. Innovation in every single aspect of the shows, no fear of letting the wrestlers actually do their thing, no fear of experimentation, no micromanagement from the owner, and best of all allowing the wrestlers a good deal of creative control.

WWE on the other hand just keeps doing whatever it thinks is safe and fears change. Congrats Vince, you’ve successfully watered down your product enough that everyone will drink it, even if it’s still distilled urine.

  7. Addendum: to be fair, a little criticism of TNA (all of which are subjective, of course):

    - it still feels rather “small”; not saying that bigger is better, but with the size of their studio space and limited number of seats, things don’t feel quite as epic when compared to WWE’s giant stadiums, huge crowds, crazy pyro, etc. Then again, that all makes the ring feel just that much smaller.

    - the “redneck vibe”; one of my initial problems with TNA. This may be related to the smaller space and more compact crowd, which in turn forces the cameras and mics to pick up more crowd noise, but in the end I think TNA is still a sort of niche company. WWE has established itself over the years in mainstream culture, but TNA is more for those of us who truly enjoy and seek out quality wrestling – and unfortunately it’s still a sort of lowbrow thing to enjoy. But hell, I love ODB for how much fun she has with the redneck angle :-P

    - the instances of brutality; while I enjoy a good fight, especially one that allows the performers to showcase their best stuff, I cringe at brutality like five guys beating on one dude in the fetal position resulting in an ambulance trip. Yes, I know nobody gets seriously hurt and that the ambulance is just for show, but if I want to see people destroying each other I’ll just visit dailymotion.com or something. Not that TNA is alone in this matter – the whole Randy-Orton-punting-people-in-the-skull angle made me a little sick as well.

Hell, I’m probably gonna come up with more on this WWE/TNA juxtaposition.. I should stop spamming the comments and just submit it all as a column to Keelan :-)
