January 13, 2009, ECW Results (New ECW Champion)

Thanks to Dan Short for these TV results for the January 13, 2009, episode of ECW on Sci-Fi

If you’d like to do show recaps email typesthetalk@gmail.com:

Todd Grisham and Matt Striker welcome us to Sioux City, IA for Extreme Championship Wrestling. They immediately plug the main event of Matt Hardy defending the ECW World Heavyweight Championship against Jack Swagger.

Mixed Tag Team Match
DJ Gabriel and Alicia Fox vs. Paul Burchill and Katie Lea
Striker explains the rules in the match, being that it must be diva vs. diva and superstar vs. superstar at all times. Only one tag happens the entire match. The divas go at it first, making it short and sweet before handing it over to the superstars. Nothing too special happens, but nothing too bad either. Everyone puts in a move or two before the big finish where Alicia jumps on Katie and then tumble out onto the floor while DJ nails Burchill with a flying european uppercut for the win. Rating: **

After the match, they play a sweet video announcing Steve Austin’s induction into the WWE Hall of Fame to the awesome tune of “Cult of Personality.”

Upon return from commercial, Tommy Dreamer comes out in a suit and cuts an emotional promo in which he talks about contemplating his future. To sum it up, he says that he will retire he if does not win the ECW Championship by June 6. Should be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming months. Promo is about as good as it can be, though Tommy kind of chokes up a little more than I’d like.

Next, they play a video package setting up Jack Swagger as the fastest rising star in WWE history and is undefeated going into tonight. I have to honestly say that I have not seen Swagger all that much and he has a smile that you just love to hate.

Back from commercial, Ricky Ortiz and Tiffany look as though they are about to kiss. Suddenly, they hear a noise and Hornswoggle runs around them mimicking their would’ve been kiss. Finaly chases after them while the couple are completely dumbfound as to what just happened. You guys aren’t the only ones.

Boogeyman vs. Sammy Savard
Squash. Plain and simple. Pump handle slam and it’s over.

They do the SmackDown Rebound, recapping Jeff Hardy and “Beth” getting into an accident. Striker and Grisham speak with Matt Hardy, asking if this has been weigh on his mind before going into tonight’s match against Swagger. Matt says he will not let the accident distract him from getting the job done tonight and will successfully retain the ECW Championship against Swagger.

They plug a fact sheet, saying that ECW was Sci-Fi Channel’s top rated show for the 15th week in a row last week. With Battlestar Galactica coming back on this Friday, that streak looks to end. They then play a video plugging Vince McMahon’s return to Raw next Monday.

ECW World Heavyweight Championship
Matt Hardy vs. Jack Swagger
Mat wrestling to get things rolling into and through the first commercial break. They kept going back and forth until Swagger knocks Hardy onto the floor and slams Hardy’s left arm against the post. Swagger works on the arm for the majority of the match, well into the second and final commercial break. After an impressive superplex, they begin going into the finish sequence. Very nice back and forth action. Hardy hits a sunset flip from the top with Swagger holding onto the top turnbuckle for dear life until it rips off. Hardy can’t hit the Twist of Fate because his left arm is hurting, but still has tricks up his sleeve. The finish sees him going up top, Swagger catching him and holding him in the electric chair, dropping him face first onto the exposed turnbuckle, and then hitting the gutwrench falling powerbomb for the win and the championship. Good match, really. There may be room down the road for the two to put together better matches potentially. Rating: ***

So there you go. ECW on Sci-Fi for Tuesday, January 13 is in the books. And we have a new champion in the undefeated Jack Swagger. With Tommy Dreamer pushing to become champion before June 6, things should be pretty interesting in the next several months. Not a bad show. Seen better, but it had a good main event.
