[Editors Note: Thanks to our new recapper Chris Gerics for this results report. If you'd like to recap a show email typesthetalk@gmail.com].
February 2, 2009, WWE Raw Results from St. Louis, Missouri:
William Regal and Layla def. CM Punk and Mickie James via Royal Knee.
Cryme Tyme def. Legacy via DQ after Rhodes and DiBiase continue to pummel Shad.
Mike Knox and Kane def. Rey Mysterio and Kofi Kingston via Chokeslam.
Beth Phoenix def. Candice Michelle via Glam Slam.
John Cena def. Chris Jericho via STF.
Opening video rolls as Raw is back in HD baby for another week of slams, trash talking, and the hottest women on television. King and Cole introduce the main even for the show, which pits Chris Jericho against the World Champion John Cena in a non-title match. We know how its going to go, but I’ll leave the breakdwon until later. Shane McMahon comes down to the ring, happier than last week, when his face could make children cry. We go to the Titantron 5000 to see the events of last week’s epic argument/brawl between Shane and Randy Orton. Even though Orton should not have gotten his ass totally handed to him, it did bring some new life into this storyline, which was becoming stale with the whole “lawsuit” deal. They return to Shane in the ring, talking about how Orton’s lawyers were coming up to him after RAW went off the air, claiming that Randy Orton wanted a match with Shane at No Way Out. Shane accepts, and there is to be a No Holds Barred match set for the PPV. Correct me if I’m wrong, but if Randy wanted a match so badly, then why didn’t he just ask? I’m sure Shane would have no problem accepting the offer. He threatens to Orton, that he will hurt him at No Way Out, and that he will do everything in his power to make sure he does not make it to Wrestlemania 25.
Orton’s music hits, and drew some mixed reactions from the crowd. All the kids from ages 7 and up were the jeerers, while the teenagers in the audience were the one’s screaming for Orton (Clever bugger had a sign “I hear voices to”) Orton questions how Shane could kick Legacy’s ass, without any help and with the talent of those 3. Simply put, they let him….yeah okay buddy. Randy would not “let” someone kick his ass, because his IED would kick in, and the guy would have his skull crushed in. The only reason that Orton “let” McMahon hurt them, is so that he could get a match…weird concept, but whatever floats the boat. He threatens Shane, that he should get a hospital room with his father, after No Way Out. After Orton approaches the ring, to do some brawling, Rhodes and DiBiase come out of nowhere, only to eat Kendo Stick from Shane, and get chased out of the ring, while a very pissed off Shane looks on.
VERY GOOD PROMO, GOOD HEAT AND REACTIONS, FUN TO START WITH
First match of the evening pits IC champion CM Punk and the lovely Mickie James against William Regal and Layla. Why are they not pushing Punk, I mean the IC title is very high, but Punk has proved he is world title quality…why not punk in the Elimination Chamber? Enough midcarding the talent. Next week an IC Title match is scheduled as Regal will face Punk. The boys start off with the basic headlock-armbar-headlock-irish whip tandem. Quick tag from Layla, forces Mickie inside, just as Regal cheap shots Punk. Layla starts putting the fists to Mickie, and they go back and forth for about 30 seconds, and the men return to do battle. Punk starts slapping Regal, and pulls an Awesome Kong-esque Spinning Backfist. Regal rolls to the outside with Layla, as Mickie springboards off the ropes to give a West Coast Pop to Layla. Regal then takes the liberty of tripping Punk, and injuring his ribs. Punk gets back into the ring at the count of 9, only to be hit with the Royal Knee by Regal. Regal pins Punk for the win, setting up next week’s title match.
BAD OPENER, NO FUN, NO ACTION, TOO SHORT…PUSH PUNK WWE!!!! 2/5.
We head to a Wrestlemania video package showcasing past Wrestlemanias. April 7, 1986 is the epic Wrestlemania II, which was broadcasting in 3 cities simultaneously. We saw the boxing match between Mr.T and Rowdy Roddy Piper, which ended in a DQ after Piper picked up, and body slammed Mr.T. Next up is The Hulkster against King Kong Bundy is the 1st steel cage match in Wrestlemania history. Hogan wins, and HULKAMANIA STILL RUNS WILD ON YOU BROTHER!!!
FUN SEGMENT, GOOD FOR THE YOUNGER FANS AND WRESTLING VETS.
We learn that John Bradshaw Layfield is going to hold an Employee Appraisal for Shawn Michaels…I think they are pusing this storyline to it’s limits. Michaels is still a very rich man, and he does not need to have his career ruined by bogus storylines that are going nowhere, and are single-handedly screwing Shawn out of another World Title before his retirement.
We hear the Legacy theme music, as Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase come out for a tag match, and they are visibly showing the effects of the caning they received from Shane O’Mac earlier that night. YO YO YO it’s Cryme Tyme! Great pops for JTG and Shad, who always win the crowd over, and can really step it up. I personally think they should give Shad a World Title Shot, just to gauge his ability against a presence such as John Cena etc..
DiBiase and JTG start the match as JTG hits a dropkick, a few punches and a turnbuckle facebuster. Rhodes is tagged in after some brawling, and starts to wear down JTG with a hammerlock. Shad is tagged in finally, and decides to destroy Legacy. and Money Drops DiBiase. Rhodes breaks up the 2 count, and Legacy continue to pummel Shad, thus causing the referee to disqualify them. After the bell, the beatdown continues, and they double team Shad, and give him a wheelbarrow type DDT, knocking him out.
NOT A BAD MATCH, COULD’VE BEEN LONGER, MORE EMPHASIS ON BIG MAN
We now cut to a video of the Mickey Rourke, and Y2J storyline involving The Wrestler. They show Y2J bad mouthing Mickey on Larry King Live, and we see Y2J in the back coming to the ring, as we go to commercial.
Only 62 days till Wrestlemania 25, and I can’t wait. We see Orton in the back yelling at Legacy, and then we cut to the ring where Chris Jericho is standing (He is the best speaker in WWE history, besides The Rock). He talks about how The Wrestler depicts that the Legends are has-beens, and they want their last shot at glory. He mentions Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka, and yes…Ric Flair himself. He calls Flair pathetic and a bad person for selling out to everyone, just to get a fat paycheck and not give a damn about his career. We hear that oh so familiar WOOOO through the crowd, when John Cena appears on the Titantron 5000 and sticks up for the legends. I mean, I’m all for the legends, but Cena has to die. I hate him, they have to stop putting him as this good guy, who saves the day, and turn him into a mean, and monster heel. He proceeds to remind Jericho that he is a hypocrite, by saying that he’s been fired twice, never shuts up about the Undisputed Title, and Always comes back for more. Cena is pissed, and says he will kick Jericho’s teeth down his throat to shut him up.
GOOD PROMO, GOOD HEAT ON JERICHO AND GREAT POP FOR CENA
Next we get ready for a big tag match with Kofi Kingston and Rey Mysterio vs. Kane and Mike Knox. This is going to be a good match because they are really pushing Knox, by putting him in the chamber, though they may be doing this to strengthen the team with Kane. They have to quit doing the Rey vs. Big Guy approach, it does not work. Throw in a Cena vs. Rey match to spice things up, so that we don’t see the exact same thing. Rey’s music hits, and all the 10 year olds go nuts….seriously. Rey comes dressed like a blue La Parka, with the skull hood. Kofi comes out. I really think that they should push Kofi to win the Chamber. He is an athletic genius, good face, and a bright star. Kane and Kofi start the match. Kane manhandles Kofi the opening minute, until Kofi dropkicks Kane out of the ring and we go to commercial. We return to see Kofi fighting off Kane, but to no avail as Kane goes for a chokeslam. Rey is tagged in, and trips up Kane on the ropes, setting up a 619, but Kane bails, sending Rey to the apron and West Coast Popping Kane. Knox is in, and so is Kofi, after a blind tag. He Boom Boom’s Knox, and gets a good reaction. Kofi fights off Knox, until he boots Kofi and knocks him out cold. Kane and Knox start to work Kofi over in the corner, and they continue to work Kofi over well. Flapjakc to Kofi, and Kane is tagged back in. Kofi hits an enziguiri, and looks to get a tag, until Kane boots Rey off the apron, to prevent a tag. Kofi hits a crossbody, and looks to tag Rey, but Rey gets there a bit too late. Finally, near the end, Rey gets the tag, and the little big man flies. Kofi attacks Knox, only to be slammed on the floos outside. Rey gets 619 but Knox catches him, and Kane puts a 1 handed chokeslam on him. Game over, Rey loses.
GREAT MATCH, FUN, LOTS OF ACTION, KANE AND KNOX TAG CHAMPS?
We go to the back, where Shane and Stephanie are talking, until Legacy takes out Shane and Stephanie with a blind assault. Orton destroys Shane, and is ready to punt him…but stops. The sick and twisted Orton turns his attention to Stephanie…and he is close to punting her, until brother Shane saves the day. Cut to commercial
DAMN GOOD ANGLE FOR THIS STORYLINE PUSH. FUN TO WATCH TO
We have Michael Cole, as serious as he can be, explaining what had just transpired between Legacy and the McMahons. This was a good video, and it shows Orton’s true sick side, and IED…but it’s getting a little tiring.
Cut to another Wrestlemania Moment. This is Wrestlemania 10 from MSG. Great brotherly battle as Bret Hart faced off against his brother Owen (R.I.P). Such a great match, with both piledrivers being used, and then Owen getting the surprising victory against his older brother with a roll up. Very good match. Next was HBK vs. Razor Ramon in the 1st Ladder match. Epic…period. Razor won, to become undisputed IC champion, but it paved the way for Money in The Bank, TLC, and some of the greatest matches of all time.
I really enjoy watching these classic moments, because they really show how great wrestling was back when they had the biggest stars, and it was a real big deal, seeing how 20 years later, the sport has changed, as well as the business aspect and the marketing.
We go to the back to see JBL preparing for his “appraisal” to HBK. I pray that this is not another 5 minute talk about how Michaels family will suffer, and how Michaels “needs” the money. No he doesn’t. He has money, just they are just dismembering the career of such a phenomenal wrestler. We need the old school HBK who does anything in his power to make sure he gets what he wants, because I am sick and tired of seeing him going to waste. Even this storyline is ruining the career of JBL, which is something I have never ever said.
Time for the Divas, where Candice Michelle (Who is the hottest Diva in the WWE) and the Glamazon Beth Phoenix…with her pansy-ass boyfriend Santino Marella, and Rosa? Seriously, put Santion in the Chamber. He is a wrestler, not a sideshow attraction. This is no soap opera, it’s a wrestling business, people wrestle, not chat and chat. They put their bodies on the line. WAKE UP WWE!!! This is your basic Diva match, not even worth talking about, no action, one good move is hit by Candice, before the Glam Slam, just puts her away.
BORING MATCH, NOT FUN, WASTE OF TIME
RIC FLAIR IS COMING TO RAW NEXT WEEK!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
My personal hero, retunrs to RAW to address Jericho about his comments….there really is a God. Should spice things up.
The music of Mamajuana hits and JBL comes out without HBk, for obvious reasons, because you know, he always needs a scapegoat. He looks pissed off, because he hasn’t let it sink in, that JBL SCREWED JBL!! He starts his speech saying how he is going to belittle, and publicly assess HBK in front of the crowd. HBK comes out to a huge pop from everybody. I think they are getting sick of this, and want some Sweet Chin Music played for JBL. The only apparent reason that JBL hired HBK, was that he could have protection, and make it Wrestlemania as the World Heavyweight Champion. For the first time in this storyline, things are actually interesting. HBK beings to gain confidence and begins to stick up for himself, by placing the blame that JBL screwed himself over, and that he has slaved and slaved, and has gotten nothing but humiliation and hatred. Great heat on JBL when he asks HBK for his release. He finally says the “real” reason why HBK was hired. He just wanted a match with HBK at No Way Out. If that’s all, they could’ve taken a better approach to the situation, then play on the minds of real people. People lost millions in the stocks, and the WWE is exploiting this…just like Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit (R.I.P). If HBK wins at No Way Out, JBL will pay HBK everything, and he’ll never have to work. If JBL wins, then he owns Shawn Michaels (So JBL owns WWE eh?), and he has to work for him for the rest of his life. Finally a break in this, because we all know HBK will win, because they cannot blow this out of proportion. HBK accepts, and gets slapped and berated for doing that. He wants to hit him….but walks away, only disappointing the viewers.
GOOD PROMO, BUT COULD’VE BEEN SOLD BETTER, MAYBE HBK SHOULD SNAP
We are shown the Orton video of him punting Shane’s ribs, for the bazillionth time. Ok we get it…Orton is Evil. We have known this for years, and we don’t need the Evolution (pardon the pun) of Orton this late into the storyline. Now we see Kane and Stephanie talking, and Kane is now in The Chamber Match. For him to do that, he called his brother….guess what?
ORTON VS TAKER FOR NEXT WEEK!!!!!!!!!! LEGEND KILLER VS LEGEND!!!
This has actually turned out to be a pretty good broadcast of RAW, lots of action so far, and good promos, and exciting. They also played the EC match a bit. Big Men, Little Men, Cena….pretty basic.
Now it is time for the Main Event. John Cena and Y2J. I really hope that this isnt a Cena win, we need the other high-carders to have their breaks. Cena comes out amidst cheers and jeers. Hopefully they don’t sell this, and give Cena all the moves and near falls. They milk him too much, but it makes money, so I can’t blame them. Back and forth brawling to start it off, followed with an insane amount of Irish whips to the turnbuckle. I could’ve sworn I saw about 8 in 2 minutes. Cena then hits a back drop, and begins the decimation of Jericho. Punches, kicks, elbows, axe-handles…anything basically. John Cena is kicked into the announcer table, as we cut to commercial. We are back and Jericho has Cena in a chin lock, though it is a blatant choke, so Jericho messed up (Cena had a few seconds of breathing difficulty). He sets Cena up on the apron, and dropkicks him off, sending the Champ flying onto the ground. Cena crawls in just before the 10 count, and is greeted by a ground and pound flurry by Jericho, who proceeds to ground him, more than normal. A few slaps, just for good measure and Cena is up. Jericho hits a dropkick, for another near fall. Jericho accidentally runs into the steel post, and this is Cen’a opening. He goes completely insane. Picture IED on Crack. 5 Knuckle Shuffle, as usual in a Cena victory. Jericho counters into the Walls, which is thrown back and forth into a few pin counts. Cena hits the Protoplex, and Cena is ready for the Throwback, until Jericho counters with Codebreker, which is countered. Then a roll up is countered into the Walls, and Cena “miraculously” kicks it into 4th gear and shoots Jericho into the STFU and tapout.
GREAT MATCH, FULL OF EXCITEMENT, NEAR FALLS, BUT VERY PREDICTED
This edition of Monday Night Raw was great, and full of exciting twists. Orton vs. Taker will be a classic match viewed for free, and Ric Flair makes his valiant return to the squared circle, to address the comments made by Chris Jericho. Rey and Kofi vs. Kane and Knox was best match of the evening, great promos, and it was very enjoyable to watch. Look for the ratings to be within 3.2-3.4
Signing Off, With Great Regards Wrestle-Heads
Chris

excellent recap i like your use of words not objectively choosing a side. can’t wait for your next one.
Being legally blind, I have a hard time following the action sometimes. I like recaps because they give me a more accurate play by play then the WWE announcers do. This is one of the best recaps I have ever read, great job and keep it up please. I look forward to your next one.
Why thank you for te kind words guys, it means alot, seeing as I already have 2 fans and this was my first recap. I just put the action into words and went from there
I’ll be recapping TNA Impact as well as Friday Night Smackdown, so you guys be prepared, and I hope you like my future recaps
Chris
Good recap. I agree with the assessment of Cena. He is, at best, a midcarder and only a heel. Its frustrating to see him getting pushed constantly and win every match he fights in, whenever it is very clear that his opponents are the ones carrying him. The Michaels angle is just poor now. He should’ve walked out a happy man knowing that all he has to do is beat JBL at no way out and hes sorted, but instead they have him near crying. Awful.
I agree Kofi needs pushed on aswell as CM Punk, hopefully cutting back on Cenas screen time. Just a quick note on Santino. We need him on the mic more. His comic timing is excellent
Man i see Randy Orton becoming more over than Cena, Just wait until he turns Face. or even that Steve austin Tweener type of role. I just feel that soon The wwe will have to turn Cena Heel, Randy may as well be the new stone cold cause he’s heel yet he gets pretty awesome pops from the crowd. Not to mention that he’s outselling Cena in merchandise. Cena’s Good guy hero act, tends to get boring -.-
I don’t like Orton all that much, maybe I would like him better as a face or a tight rope walker like Steve Austin, but as he is now I don’t like him.
Thanks Gary for the comments. They really have to push the others, or they are going to lose a lot of viewers, who are trying to see something new. Santino on the mic is priceless, and we need it more, as he did before.
They should proceed to push Punk, Kofi, AND Knox, thanks to the Camber, but personally, take Knox. We need a big guy as champion.
Taurean, thank you for responding, I hope you liked the recap. Orton gets the huge pops from the viewers who aren’t 7 years old. If the WWE keeps running Cena as a good guy, then people will lose interest, and they will lose money. Orton is the big star now, and they should push him, like they did when he won the title at 20 years of age.
Enjoyed the Feb. 2 report. This Gerics guy knows his stuff.
Tom (Big fan going back to Yukon Eric.)
Bring back the old HBK!. Fire Cena, give other wrestlers screen time!. Damn WWE!. Can’t believe Ortons merchandise is selling more then Cenas!. Thats quite a shock!.
