CW Network Bosses Explain Why They’re Dropping WWE Smackdown
CW Network bosses have been doing the media rounds lately, re-explaining why they are dropping Smackdown from they’re network this Fall/Autumn. Firstly they are trying to reposition and brand the network as a mixed to more female audience and they feel WWE Smackdown is watched almost completely by men. Secondly as I’ve reported before despite having consistently strong ratings wrestling fans tend to watch the show then flip to another channel afterwards, instead of checking out other shows on the network.
There is also the age old theory that wrestling fans may come in droves to watch the shows, but never spend any money, nor pay any attention to the advertisements. Advertisers hate advertising during wrestling and Vince himself is still trying to get some mainstream advertisers to utilize his product. Anyone notice Santino’s reference to Pepsi (I know its CM Punk, but still), and Edge’s run in with the Slim Jim guy?
