Column: WWE’s Future Superstars

My article today is a slight response to the Matt Saye article about WWE’s “up and coming” I saw on this site. In his article he listed a host of names as up and coming superstars to watch in the WWE, however there were two names that whether intentionally or not were missed; the first being Jack Swagger.

Personally I’ve been very impressed with the Oklahoma wonder since his joining of WWE and their “third” brand ECW. From the start he showed one thing which many established superstars including a certain Shelton Benjamin lack, Charisma. Whether it be his cocky (excuse the pun) swagger to the ring or that smile he gleams at the camera after demolishing his opponents, the lad is certainly not lacking on the character front. Match that with his great mat wrestling skills, timing and strength and he easily has the potential to at some point be a main event player. He has already shown he can carry a title, in the ECW Championship, something which I feel he has done better than anyone else with that title possibly since Bobby Lashley, and that includes such names as Matt Hardy, CM Punk & John Morrisson.

I have heard talk of him being one of the names, if it were to happen, to end the Undertaker’s Wrestlemania streak, which personally I doubt, but who knows? He certainly has the talent. He also has something which is essential if he wishes to climb the WWE ladder of success, a great finisher.

I have yet to see his Gutwrench powerbomb to be botched. And I believe there is a lot to be said for a good finisher. For example someone like Shelton Benjamin would struggle to get past a certain level with a finisher such as the Paydirt. The same could be said for Mr Kennedy.

Another wrestler that was not mentioned was the also impressive Ted DiBiase Junior, who for those who don’t know has been cast in The Marine 2, which must surely mean a main event status at some point, if only to promote the film. However I do believe that he has what it takes, as he has undoubtedly carried Cody Rhodes in many a tag match as well as having superior Mic skills to him. He also has the look and from videos I have seen of him in developmental, has the potential to be a good in ring competitor.

Finally I would like to comment on Mr CM Punk. Before arriving in the WWE he helped push Ring of Honor to the level it is at the moment with incredible 5 star classics against Samoa Joe. Upon joining the WWE he quickly became a rising star and since then has held 3 major singles titles as well as the tag titles. Not to mention the fact he is now a 2 time Money in the bank winner, certainly says that someone in the back likes him.

However I feel that sooner or later the man should be given a heel turn and allowed the chance to run free. Many people say the time to turn someone heel is when they are most popular and personally I feel that should CM Punk be given the right push he could be turned after Wrestlemania 26. I know he has the potential to play a heel due to his fantastic work in Ring of Honor and for those that doubt his Mic skills check some of that stuff out. As well as this I feel he would bring a valuable change to the Raw Roster so he could work in that main event picture with people like Triple H and HBK as they are fast running out of fresh feuds.

  1. you hit the nail right on the head with Punk. When I saw him in the indies in Detroit he did this crusade against hardcore wrestling and it was just great! His mic skills are solid. Much better then other main event stars like Randy Orton who to me, sounds nervous all the time.
Swagger has a way to go in my opinion. He does have a good ring presence however. I just think he needs a better finishing move. The gut wrench powerbomb is a basic move. Something unique to him would be better. His mic. Skills aren’t bad, but they aren’t good either. He’s young. I think he has a good future, I just don’t think he’s a main event yet . Time will tell.

  2. With the finishers, i think its the other way around, true its not yet o be botched, but i think thats because its a boring finisher, that doesnt even look like a finisher, much like the FU, i do tend to like the explosive finishers you can just pull out of nowhere, mic skills, good, and on cm punk, ill take a look at his heel videos but before i do ive always thoght they should make him heel soon, because i just dont see what others do in him, it honesltey wouldnt make a difference to my veiwing pleasue if he was there or not, but ill wait and see!

  3. ted dibiase has a longgggggggggggggg way to go to catch up to his old man.. the million dollar man was an absolute legend!
