Column: WWE’s New show “Superstars” Good or Bad?

Well it’s official starting this Thursday WWE will take an even larger hold on the wrestling world as it starts its Thursday night show WWE Superstars. The show will consist of matches from different brands and with the show being an hour long, giving it 40 minutes after commercials and then 30 minutes after plugs and video packages we should receive 2 to 3 matches a show. But is this a positive thing for the WWE? Or is this a case of Vince McMahon trying to shove such people as Vladimir Kozlov down our throats an extra night a week.

Well if this week’s show is anything to go by perhaps not. So far there have been two matches announced (which I think will be all) Undertaker V Matt Hardy and Christian V Finlay in the ECW Championship Elimination Chase. These are hardly two low key matches with prominent stars from ECW and Smackdown coming out to kick off this show on WGN America. In terms of commentating there will be official commentating team for the show with each brand’s respective announcers taking their own matches. Another positive aspect of the show is that it will not mean WWE wrestlers working anymore than at the moment. This is due to the fact that the matches for this program will be recorded at House shows in a similar way to Smackdown and ECW.

The show is broadcast on a Thursday which although may not go up at the same time will be on the same day as TNA Impact. Whether this was an intentional move or not I would imagine this may have a small effect on their ratings. Hopefully this will mean TNA upping their game and producing more intense shows than they are creating at the moment.

One thing I am hopeful of this show is the chance for them to show lower card talent on the roster, which would give such people like Curt Hawkins, Zack Ryder, Dolph Ziggler, Charlie Haas and Jamie Noble a run out which would allow them more time to expand as performers before being shown more on the bigger shows. Although I am sure their is no intention for this to become HEAT I’m sure no-one will mind if some of the lower and middle card guys are given a try out.

So on that hand it looks good. However it could so easily backfire on them. For example if this show was to have stars like Undertaker & Matt Hardy on it every week I would imagine it would quickly start to have a higher TV rating than ECW. This although great for this show would belittle the ECW brand which already is considered such a nothing show (For example, No ECW Title Match at Wrestlemania).

Whether or not this show has what it takes will have to be seen but let us hope that it is not a show used simply to plug endless promo’s and video packages of the main feuds on Raw and Smackdown.

If you have any feedback for me, negative or positive it would be much appreciated at Britrocksyndrome@hotmail.co.uk

  1. Still no sign of WWE Superstars on the UK Sky Sports listings, so doesn’t look like the British public will get to see it!

  2. There is too much wrestling now to watch, WWE product is getting stale and boring, another show will just kill the talent development show ECW.
What is the WWE trying to achieve by adding another weekly sub par show? more exposure to it product is not needed, better writing and fresh ideas is what is needed.

  3. As somebody that has to watch all the shows, I agree with you. I honestly can’t tell you what happened at all this week. It all just merges in to a big mush. I’m not particularly enjoying any of it right now.

  4. I can’t believe anyone hasnt thought of this but me. wwe superstars is a great show for all three brands. And it may bring the wwe talent exchange crap to a end because everyone now will get more exposure for big stars to be on the show. And we will see less people going on a brand they dont belong on. We saw a lot of good wrestling, and this may be a opportunity to see storylines countinue. You shouldnt jump to comclusions based on one show, a lot more good will come out of this then bad, just wait.

  5. Totally hear what you are saying Keelan,

  6. i think wrestling is boring right now wwe and tna roh i mean come on there is no more things that havent been done yet now i did like the wrestling thing on mtv where they had people come and 1 one a year contract what happen to maven???? maybe wrestling and mma combo that would be great
