Column: Main Eventers Are An Endangered Species
Hello guys, this is my second column, feel free to comment.
As the whole world is potentially facing the really chaotic and destructive problem of global warming, losing animals and insects daily, there is also one more specie which is really important for us and even more so for Vince Kennedy McMahon and this is Main Eventer!
Mega stars like stone cold and The Rock are gone; the wrestlers who seemed to be the future of WWE have been released, like Bobby lashely, Brock Lesnar and Mr. Kennedy, and the current main eventers are getting older and older day by day.
There is a serious lack of main eventers in the company. WWE only have 7 or 8 wrestlers who can function at the main event level (I’m not counting ECW wrestlers) so do you guys think a company like WWE who have 17 (other than house shows) shows during a month can depend on only on 8 guys? Well hell no, I can can probably count more main event wrestlers in TNA, who only have 5 shows per month.
So what is the talent department doing??? Can’t they find some fresh new talent or do we have to keep watching the same faces week in and week out? Or are going to have to watch untalented guys reach main event like John Cena (Just my opinion).
Let’s look to the future. Are these guys really going to last much longer?
The Undertaker: He has nagging injuries and will retire in a few years.
Shawn Michaels: Same for Michaels, he will be in the hall of fame maybe next year.
HHH: I give him 4 years tops.
Batista: With the injuries plaguing his carrier he may be out after 2 years or less.
Rey Mysterio: after having 5 surgeries on his left knee, he will be expired in not more than 2 year.
So who’s left?
Randy Orton
John Cena
Chris Jericho
Edge
CM Punk
Jeff Hardy (if he does not leave)
And you can add some more wrestlers like MVP, DH Smith and maybe Jack Swagger.
With MVP, Being a wrestling fan, I judge wrestlers by their wrestling not their promo skills. So do you guys think a guy like MVP, who to me appears limited in the ring, deserves the main event status? Can MVP handle the world title, if you compare MVP to HHH , Stone cold , Rock or even Jeff Hardy , Edge or CM punk he is nowhere near the top. His biggest fan is Sherri Shepherd.
The point is that If WWE uses their current wrestlers without developing them and giving them a proper build for the future, they will be in serious jeopardy when the realize they have nobody left to carry the ball. Let’s hope some one like the rock and stone cold will SAVE US and revolutionize the industry or maybe TNA can eventually become a competitor.

I agree that the main event light is very dim. WWE seems to be scared to just push a gimic straight to stardom after the forementioned Lashley/Lesnar angle blew up in their face.
However i do think that the company has some time before the role into the new dacade to push up & coming talent, especially if they knock of Sir Hemsley and admit the failed comparison between Cena & Austin/Rock.
Way to conterdict yourself. You rip on John Cena on not being a main eventer, but then you turn right around and call him a main eventer. So (in your opinion) is he or is he not? Make up your mind.
I think his point is that he doesn’t think Cena deserves to be there. It’s a fact that he is there.
The aticle makes some great points and matches up almost exactly how I’ve been feeling about WWE for quite a while. The money has diluted the talent and, in my humble opinion, VKM’s passion for his own company and brands. Back in the day WWF at the time had a 4 hour show on and also other shows on the weekends that allowed for more time for the wrestlers to banter instead of wrestle and it was ALL about the fans. Now the shows are a couple of hours with mostly the storyline being told instead of as much great wrestling action. It almost seems like as soon as Stephanie took over SD a few years back that WWE has turned more into a soap opera most of the time instead of the awesome smack talk and brutal action that made WWE into a multi-billion dollar company. “And that’s the bottom line…”
i am saying that cena doesnot deserve the mainevent status just right now because he have to develop in-ring to match the level of the rock and stone cold, but rightnow he is there and credit goes to lazy wwe creative and talent department.
Typo – “only on 8 guys? Well hell no, I can can probably ”
“Batista: With the injuries plaguing his carrier”
Yes, the Undertaker doesn’t have much left, if anyone has notice in most of his matches he can barely get up and continue his role. I give him about 3 years, I wonder what Michelle McCool will do then, I have no idea why WWE would give her both Diva titles, other then that she is the Undertakers h03, she is skin /bone and can barely perform. Mickie James, Beth and Melina are better then her.
Its a Shame they are not paying Rey Mysterio What he is worth, like if he is a rookie. In Every match he shows them all that he is worth every penny…
Randy Orton- people are getting tired of seeing Randy Orton & John Cena go up against the same people. Him and Jack Swagger or someone else would be fun.
Jericho looks like he is getting out of shape.
CM Punk is almost there.
Jeff Hardy- Another one being ripped off by WWE.
MVP can be in the main event but still has things to improve on.
I think that you are generally very insightful and execute your columns quite well. I do however disagree with the notion that MVP is limited in the ring though I am also very skeptical as to whether he could carry a headline position. I think that mvp despite his silly costume and gimmick is one the best ring psychologists in wrestling today and does very well with the in match storyline. I think that MVP can carry a good match and make other stars look good, I would rate him just a step below Edge and Jericho in this area. As far as interviews go I feel he should play the “straight man” and let a charismatic heel carry him. As a writer and a lifelong wrestling fan, I would just like to say, keep up the good work!
(first of all i know that my massege is too long but please if you are realy a wrestling fan then you shuold read it thank you)
i think you are absulotly right wwe is at stake at this moment because their last decade wreslters are retiring soon (you are right about that)and their storylines are bad and getting worse and their new genration aint that good they have a lots of money and they do nothing about it well my opinion is when wwe turned to PG they became bad because they have removed a lots of violent scenes and turned the pro wrestling to just been like normal fighing undistry well pro wrestling is better than that pluse they removed almost all the big moves that they used to do normaly regular punches one or two moves every match that is realy bad.
compared to TNA who i dont know if they are PG but has a {i dont want to say great storylines} but they have a good storylines compared to wwe their main event storyline are like no other and their tag team storyline is not bad infact it might get better and their monsters storylines are extreme hardcore i mean even now they book a thounsand taks match for womens and that is realy amazing {ow and by the way TNA has brought the womens wrestling to a hole new level) and dont forget the x division brand wich has very amazing athlete and wrestling has a lot of action in the ring in my opinion if TNA had more money they would crush the wwe like a bag
ow one more thing:wwe has lost alots of peices in its company they removed the hardcore champioship
their tagteam divion is not good
and they removed all the cruiserweight wrestling from it
i think this move has played an improtant role of screwing the wwe thats all i have to say
ow and by the way if wwe continue like that it wont stay around to the next decade
wwe needs to stop cuttin every star they get..and this pg era has to go..
WWE has the ability to make anyone with some potential a big star,(look back on the past) and they have plenty of young wrestlers with that potential. There is no need to worry about future main eventers.
good work jawad and keep it up .
and you are right that WWE have to do something about their main event wrestlers or they will be in jeopardy
Shelton Benjamin is the best wrestler in the wwe hands down! =O he should get a world title shot!
Ok, Shelton Benjamin is HORRIBLE!!!!! Nobody cares about his matches, and same goes for MVP. The only ones who cares is little kids who thinks he is a cool guy “thug” with his ballin and such. Horrid. The only up and comers that I would say have even a chance to make an impact in the future are guys like, John Morrison, Mr. Kennedy(who is now out), CM Punk has a ways to go but is on his way. The Brian Kendrick would be awesome if he would stop being such a dumb ass. And i agree with almost all of you, non of this will happen if WWE does not get out of this “PG” crap.
We can’t say we didn’t see this coming. When Vince raided all those promotions back in the 80’s, those superstars were already established with 10-15 years experience. There are some exceptions (Goldberg, Lesner), but it usually takes a few years to develope a superstar with the right combination of skill and psycology. In the mean time, who’s gonna fill that void?
Anyone remember the talent exchanges back during the territories? You had World Champion vs. World Champion matches? And what about the Crockett Cup? Or World War III? You had all that talent from around the world, you got to see great matches, and everybody won. I know, I know, the game’s not the same anymore, but I think if promoters put the good of the business ahead of their pocketbooks, it might help the problem.
i can’t believe no-ones mentioned christian! when he went to TNA he really established himself as a singles competitor and when he was TNA champ he handled it really well and he knows how to work the crown given the chance! why doesn’t the WWE push christian to compete for the top 2 titles instead of just the ECW title???
I think wwe is trying to hard to bring back the attitude era and are making up ridicolous storylines that leave nothing for the wwe to do
Take john morrison for example
hes rising very fast and will become a main eventer
dolph ziggler
is the same
etc etc.
i think wwe needs to bring back eric bishcoff
and they need to stop making superstars change face
for example
triple h= borrriinnnggggg
triple h in 2003= main eventing superstar
the days of wwf will never return if the wwe dont bring in enough talent
