Column: Does WWE Really Need New Stars or New Feuds?
I recall reading an article only a couple of months ago in a wrestling magazine saying that WWE had the best main event roster that they have had in years. That people like Cena, Orton and Batista aren’t being groomed to be main eventers anymore because they are main eventers. So what went wrong, how can in the space of a couple of months so much change? The answer is it hasn’t. Fans are becoming frustrated because they are seeing the same rivalries week in week out. But in my view it is not that we need more fresh faces we just need to adjust the old one’s.
People say they have seen every match possible in the current main event scene, but with a few heel/babyfaces turns new life could be put thrust in to the product. Think about it, would an Orton and Edge rivalry really be so bad? WWE don’t need to bring in a load of new faces they just need to mix it up a bit. Personally I would love to see a few Jeff Hardy/ Rey Mysterio feud.
They could even do a few rivalries that have been already touched on but not used to their full potential. Like an Undertaker/Cena feud. It was done to a small extent a couple of years ago but would be very different today, as Cena’s persona has changed so much. We could have one last HHH/HBK feud. I mean think about it if Shawn really is considering retiring next year Triple H is a likely opponent for his last match so why not milk this feud for all it’s got? There are so many possibilities left that are right in front of WWE that they for some reason just won’t capitalize on it.
Also we have to consider many of WWE main eventer’s still have a good couple of years left in them. Randy Orton isn’t even thirty yet. So if we think his feuds are repeating themselves, now what’s it going to be like in five year’s time? It is possible that Triple H might even still be around then. We could still be seeing Orton and HHH main eventing pay per views, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
WWE have become so kid friendly that they are simplifying their stories to such an extent that they are almost unwatchable. WWE have to go back to the attitude era to some extent, when huge thought was put into storylines to make them seem new and exciting. The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin headlined Wrestlemania on three occasions. However their rivalries never got boring… why… because they were innovative and exciting. They just need to make old rivalries seem new and original. Like they did with Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho. They had many matches in the past but brought their latest rivalry to a whole new level of entertainment.
So I make a plea to WWE don’t be so hasty of pushing newcomers over current stars, as there is still so much they can do. I don’t mean stop raising new stars, just look at the way you are using your current one’s and try and improve on it.

Yes maybe they could have some turns and feuds with the current “main eventers” but the point is that people like HBK, Undertaker and Batista are going to retire in the next few years and if they don’t start to build up new talent now then in 3 years time the’ll be screwed.
I agree with Daniel. Plus you can only make so many turns at once for it to believable and since there hasn’t been a solid wrestler to play both the good & bad cop since the forementioned Stone Cold and Rock. HHH can’t play the bad guy if he wasn’t even booed with Jeff, Jeff’s a fan favorite, Edge likes being booed, Jericho is the best heel today, Cena is gay, Randy has turned into a bitch, and most everyone else is injury prone.
Push the new guys Uprising rules.
i just think the characters are not as inventive anymore and so the build up to the main events are not exciting….ie rey vs chris (Yawn) as a result the build up promos to the main events are now so boring that it reminds me of school yard tit-for-tat. i do think that there needs to be new characters on the scale of the undertaker, kanes, papa shangos, ultimate warriors….characters that have a mystery about them building up a slightly darker angle. i am sick fed up with wrestlers just have names ie kurt angle, chris jericho, shawn michaels, randy orton, john cena (it just shows a very slack creative group the wwe have). Look at TNA at least they are trying to inject some creative edge with suicide, abyss etc
what do you guys feel with my point?
I agree with this article completly. I always see people saying the need new faces of the main event but they already have them. HHH and Orton has been sucked dry, theres nothing left in that feud and hopefully after Night of Champions it will be done with. Some feuds id love to see, and i think they would work well is: HHH and HBK one last time, Chris Jericho and Christian (may not be a main event but still would be nice), The Undertaker and John Cena, and even The Undertaker and Chris Jericho. Add a title to any of these and you’ve got a interesting main event, and not a repeat of teh previous month. These were just a few i could think of but lets hope the WWE utulizes their main event talent before they retire (like Take and HBK), and not ruin a legacy that has shaped the WWE.
how about a matt hardy undertaker fued? now that hardys a heel, he’s on smackdown again, and they are very different from one another. it would be interesting.
I completely disagree with the article you read; I think the main eventers currently in WWE are some of the most boring ever. Not really on their part, as they are trying their best, but it’s definitely more to do with the writers repeating the same old storylines every few months.
I think the CM Punk heel turn is a good move, and I would like to see the WWE turn up the heat on that one and really milk it for all its worth. The fact that he lives the “straight-edge” lifestyle is a great opportunity to turn him into a preaching, self-righteous asshole!
I agree with you that a Triple H/Shawn Michaels feud would be a fitting storyline for next year’s WrestleMania. Triple H has been a face for too long now. I think he was one of the most successful heels of all time, and I would really like to see a heel turn from him in the near future. The more I think about it, the more I love that idea…
But basically I feel like we’ve seen the same Triple H/John Cena/Randy Orton feud, or variations of it, for the past two years. It’s getting very monotonous and the WWE really needs to “shake things up”, much more than they tried to do with this year’s draft.
i agree with you , these main eventer’s are not bad and it is not in their hand’s but the real problem is the PG and Vince.
WWE have completely sucked orton and HHH and now they ahve became boring.
here is a idea for vince
why don’t you buy couple of wrestlers like kurt angle(give him a good paycheck) ,RVD , Goldberg(i know it’s impossible) , bobby lashely . brock lesnar(just kidding) and give HHH & orton some rest
I like the idea of swapping stuff around, it was only mentioned the other day that it is looking like Edge is being pushed to being a face by the audience. Edge as a face could add a whole nother level to his game now he is older and more experienced in the ring. I expect this to happen when he returns from injury.
I agree about HHH, if they could do a decent turn for HHH back to heel it would be the best thing they have done with him in a long time, he really fits a heel personality much better than a face.
You do have the problem as Scarlett pointed out though, some of them simply are boring. Rey Mysterio for one.. I can’t think of him being in a memorable feud since Eddie passed away, the only thing memorable about his recent stuff with Jericho is the matches. Batists is just boring in general, he has no personality and is fairly limited in the ring, and fails to make any story they have given him even slightly interesting. I frankly just don’t like Cena.
Also, there is the whole is making a complicated storyline the right thing? Just look at Orton Vs HHH/McMahons.. That story was pretty straight forward but has many many factors. Then look at Hardy Vs Hardy, very simple, very shocking in the sense of wha tMatt was said to of done. Wrong two guys to carry it out.
All the best storylines are simple. Look at HBK Vs Hart WM12 the build up for that match was awesome, a match built-up on pure respect. Austin Vs Rock, there was never much of a storyline there just two guys who hated each other and kept messing with each other. Yeah, you had the Corporation and the Invasion in there, but primarily it all started over the I.C. Title and it was just hatred.
Do we need new stars? Yes, there can be no harm in adding a John Morrison to the equation, a Jack Swagger… That is when the ageing stars get chance to shine again and the young pups get chance to cememnt themselves. We may not need them as much as is portrayed, but we do need them to start rising.
I think the Edge/Orton feud would be awesome.
the mini one they had before WrestleMania 23
was entertaining.
An Edge face turn seems inevitable, similar to when Triple H returned from injury in 2002 as a face when he went out as a heel. It just seems like there are too many heels and the same old faces hanging around.
