2009, WWE Hell In A Cell PPV Results
- Hell in a Cell for the World Heavyweight Championship: CM Punk vs. The Undertaker. Decent opener with both working hard. There was talk during the last week of this closing the show so it opening is quite a surprise. Undertaker got the win following a chokeslam after he blocked a Punk chairshot. The Tombstone came straight after that followed by Taker pinning Punk, 1, 2, 3. Winner and new World champion: The Undertaker. The title change isn’t a huge surprise, although it comes way too early in the feud, in my opinion, and Taker didn’t look 100% from a physical POV.
- John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental Title is up next. Solid match but not spectacular. Morrison missed Starship Pain relatively early on which was on the only thing up to that point that the crowd had reacted big to. Ziggler then dominated with takedowns and some slower paced offence before Morrison made his comeback to a decent pop. They went back and forth with some near falls. Ziggler countered Starship Pain but Morrison fought back and hit him with a running knee to the head before finally hitting Starship Pain and getting the pinfall. Winner and still IC champion: John Morrison.
- Backstage interview with Batista and the returning Rey Mysterio with Big Dave saying Jerishow can’t claim to be the best tag team today as they hadn’t beaten him and Rey.
- The PPV is sponsored by Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. We were “treated” to a Turtles videogame trailer as well as Vintage Michael Cole saying COWABUNGA! The joy…
- Mickie James vs. Alicia Fox for the Divas Championship is up next. Good pop for Mickie on her way to the ring. Both women worked hard in front of a VERY quiet crowd who weren’t even particularly into Mickie once the match got started. FInish came when Mickie kicked out of a Northern Lights suplex and hit a swinging DDT which looked to hurt Alicia who went hard into the mat on the top of her head. An ok match. Winner and still Diva’s champion: Mickie James.
- Chris Jericho and Big Show vs. Rey Mysterio and Batista for the Undisputed Tag Team Titles is up next. Mysterio looked great working with Jericho early on, as you’d expect if you saw any of their matches earlier in the year. Show also worked well with Mysterio, with one spot seeing Rey sat on the top turnbuckle and Show chopping him, causing him to fall backwards to the outside. Rey was worked over for most of hte match before making the hot tag to Dave, who got several close counts on Jericho. Big Show distracted Dave, allowing Jericho to hit him with the Codebreaker for a two count. All four traded moves following this with the crowd really into it. Mysterio came off the top rope to hit Show with a DDT for a two count. A really cool finish came when Rey hit Big Show with a 619. He followed it up with a springboard attempt but Big Show hit Rey with the KO punch in midair. Show made the cover and got the 1, 2, 3. Winners and still tag team champions: Chris Jericho and Big Show.
- Hell in a Cell for the WWE Title: John Cena vs. Randy Orton. Yep, after a title match opened the show, Cena-Orton is going on fourth from top, meaning a non-title tag team match headlines tonight. They brawled and fought around the outside of the ring early on with very little happening inside the ring until Orton brought in the ring steps and tried to DDT Cena onto them. Cena blocked it and backdropped Orton to the outside. Cena went through his moves until Orton blocked the FU and hit a DDT. Orton went for the RKO but Cena blocked and hit an FU, but only got a two count.
Orton got back in control of the match and used a chair to hit Cena in the back of the head and the stomach. Orton then went for a kneedrop onto the chair which he placed over Cena. Cena moved and countered straight into the STF. At this point the ref took a bump before Cena reapplied the hold. Orton tapped but of course it didn’t count. Cena went to get the referee back in the ring but when he turned around he walked into an RKO, which he managed to kick out of. Orton then tied Cena up in the ropes and locked in a sleeper hold. Cena looked out and when the referee released his arms from the ropes, he fell forward. Orton went for the punt to the head which looked to have missed but nonetheless he made the cover and got the 1, 2, 3. Winner and new WWE champion: Randy Orton.
- R-Truth vs. Drew McIntyre is up next. Talk about a tough spot to put this bout in straight after a title match inside a Cell. They had an ok little match but the occasional ‘Boring’ chant could be heard, which you’d have to put down to their position on the card. Drew got the win following a double underhook DDT.
- They immediately cut away after the win to a backstage segment with Randy Orton and Legacy. Orton warned them about being over-confident about being DX. Cody Rhodes said Orton was reminding him of his old man (Dusty), which Orton didn’t like. He told them that if he was them, he’d listen. DiBiase said Orton shouldn’t underestimate him and Rhodes. I guess that’s the start of the DiBiase babyface turn.
- Kofi Kingston vs. The Miz vs. Jack Swagger for the United States Title is up next. We’re at 3.15am (10.15pm EST) so I don’t see this going particularly long. THere’s no pre-match video but Miz cuts a short promo running down Newark. They had an ok match but like the last one, the crowd didn’t care much about this match at all. Finish came when Swagger hit Boune with a powerbomb but Kofi look out Swagger and made the cover hismelf. Winner and still U.S champion: Kofi Kingston
- Hell in a Cell: DX vs. Legacy is tonight’s main event. DX came out first but were attacked on their way to the ring by Rhodes and DiBiase. They brawled around ringside with Rhodes being doubled suplexed onto an announce table and DiBiase tossing Triple H in to the crowd. All four fought in the crowd. Rhodes took out Michaels using a chain then Legacy took Trips up the ramp and gave him a double DDT then Crossroad underneath the Titantron. Legacy returned to ringside and worked on Michaels’ knee. They locked the Cell door leaving themselves with HBK inside the Cell with Trips still up the ramp. At this point, the bell to finally get the match started.
The 2-on-1 attack continued for some time as Trips slowly crawled down towards the ring. He looked for a way into the Cell as Michaels fought back in the ring. Trips eventually started to climb the Cell as as Michaels hit DiBiase with a superkick. Rhodes stopped the cover and hit Michaels with a chair. Trips took a chair and started to try and smash up the lock keeping him out of the Cell. He had no joy, so eventually he walked to the back, which got some boos but I assumed it was him going to get a sledgehammer. DiBiase dropkicked a chair into Michaels’ face then Rhodes locked in a figure four on Michaels around the ringpost. Trips returned to the ring with…some boltcutters! He cut the chain as Michaels was hit by Dream Street onto a chair. Trips cleaned house and hit DiBiase with the chain used to lock the Cell door. He gave DiBiase a pedigree on the outside then DX locked him out of the cage, leaving Rhodes alone inside with them. They put a chair over Rhodes’ neck then Michaels hit an elbow drop. Triple H then went under the ring to get the sledgehammer. Michaels hit Rhodes with the superkick as Trips nailed him at the same time with the Gamehammer. Michaels made the cover and 1, 2, 3 it was over. Winners: DX.
Post-match, the Cell was raised and DiBiase ran to check on Rhodes, only to be hit with a superkick from Michaels.

Hey Keelan – “with Big Dave saying Jerishow”
I’m glad I didn’t pay for this ppv…
IDIOTS, Why not put legacy over!
It’s times like this I’m glad I dont waist my money on a WWE gimmick ppv
Kee, you said that “when Swagger hit Boune with a powerbomb” – was Evan Bourne added to the match or did you mean Miz?
I dont know what ever one is giving out about it was actually a pretty decent PPV.
I knew Punk was nothing more than a transition Champ or should I say Chump.
Dx over legacy was a given, good match though.
Good to see that Orton got the clean win over Cena.
As far as the no blood I told you it wouldnt be hard to make these matches bloodless all they had to do was prohibt the wreslters from blading themselves. Contrary to popular belife wrestlers almost never bleed the hardway.
Well, I am kinda surprised to see that the main event weren’t a title match, either WWE, either WHC…
Damn that Taker. I knew he is going to win, just didn’t want to believe… :/ DAMN!
I watched it from Torrent, can’t get it here (Sweden) nor would I pay for it even if I could, because HELL IN A CELL SUCKED ASS! I can’t believe how badly executed some of these watches were (half the matches weren’t even in a cell… so why have them?) or why Orton was allowed to win again. Can RAW really only have Cena, Triple H or Orton as their main eventers? In Smackdown, I hope we’ll now see a renewed brotherly rivalry between Undertaker and Kane, but they’ll probably just make ten rematches between CM Punk and the Taker. And if they put more Cena vs. Orton matches on, I’m going to puke out my guts. Oh yeah, and that Scottish newbie sucks even more than R-Truth.
I think my time with wrestling is slowly going to fade away…
I was there last night and I have to say that HIAC is my fav match time, but this whole PG rating kinda made the HIAC matches a major let down. How do Orton and Cena fight on top on Raw and no one does at the PPV? These matches didn’t meet up to the legendary past HIAC matches.
p.s. PLZ BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL ECW SO WE HAVE SOME DECENT WRESTLING TO WATCH
sorry but the orginal ECW wasnt decent wrestling……….it was good to watch, dont get me wrong…. but if you want decent wrestling, watch taker/micheals or styles/joe/daniels…thats wrestling!
on the ppv, glad i didnt buy it, the only thing good about hell in a cell is people going off the top, or threw it, would have liked to have seen hardy stick around for this ppv, guess he got out at the right time so he didnt have to do a near death spot off the cage!
This PPV killed pretty much turned me off to WWE for at least the time being.Every PPV gets worse than the last.My biggest problems were the following-
Boring matches (US title match, diva match,R-Truth/Mccintyre)
Same main eventers going at it (Cena/Orton…DX/Legacy)
WWE championship/WHC being bounced around like Russo era WCW titles.
WWE really needs to fire it’s entire “creative” team and start anew.
the taker vs. punk match was a dissapointment…
Just by reading about the PPV it was awful, but that’s what WWE has become. It’s not even good wrestling anymore, it’s dull drama with some silly parts, which is rare as hell now a days.
To Tharock01, this is probably the last year of Shawn Michael’s career and the last incarnation of DX; they are not going to spend a lot of time losing. It is not incumbent on DX or the WWE to put Legacy over…Legacy must put Legacy over. Every week they are given time on the mic, and vignettes. Dude, if they can’t get over with the screen time they are given, they don’t deserve to be over.
here here brian james!!!
