Regarding title reigns, I still to this day don't understand why certain wrestlers always make a point of being a 12 time or 16 time World Champion. All that says to me is they've lost too many times! I'd much rather be a long reigning one time World Champion than 16 times!
Tommy Rich basically said the same thing in a promo about Harley Race many, many moons ago and - in retrospect - he committed quite the no-no. How many wrestlers have you heard say, in one form or another, "When doing a promo, never say your opponent sucks. If the guy is no good, why should they buy a ticket"? So losing and regaining the title is a badge of honor in the business rather than, "Why the hell can't you hold on to the f'ing thing?"
I thought Kee's explanation in the TruthCast was pretty spot on. Wrapping that belt around a guy's waist is a promoter's way of saying, "I trust you with my business. You will make me the most money." Looking at it in another way, it could also be like saying, "We tried it with another guy and it didn't work. We want you on top again." And again. And again. So Flair was told in two different decades (the 80's and 90's), "I trust you with my business. You are the best"
16 times.
And he wasn't even banging the boss's daughter.
Jim Cornette, on Triple H: "And a sledgehammer? Jesus Christ, I wish he'd hit me in the head with it before he starts talking on TV."
